Relay Victory Lifts Longwood to Title: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Chris Antonacci. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 09 Feb 2004:

After four hours of running, leaping and throwing at the Suffolk large schools boys indoor track and field championships last Monday, it all came down to two seconds.

Of course, any one of the finishes at the Suffolk large schools boys indoor track and field championships impacted the team standings. Yet Longwood could not secure its first title since 2000 until Brett Wilson, A.J. Datkun, Gary Hart and Gil Callaway combined to finish second in the final event – the 4 x 200-meter relay.

Longwood’s time of 1 minute, 37.03 seconds eclipsed Commack’s fourth-place posting of 1:39.02. Longwood received eight points to finish with 70. Commack earned four for 68. Bay Shore was third with 58 points and two-time defending champ Northport took fourth with 49.

“It might be an individual sport to everyone else but it’s a team sport to us,” Longwood coach Joe Reilly said as he clutched the baton his relay teams used at Suffolk CC-Brentwood. “You can never be completely confident with the 4 x 200, but we didn’t have a letdown. Every kid had a job, and every kid did a job.”

Fifth-place finisher Half Hollow Hills East, which had 43 points, took the final event in 1:36.76. West Islip came in third in 1:37.93.

Longwood accrued 18 points, including Michael Lynch’s winning throw of 52-5 3/4, in the shot put. Callaway was second (6.74) in the 55 dash, and Datkun placed third (38.12) in the 300. Eddie Yarworski finished second (1:27.93) in the 600. Keegan Johnson soared 43-11 1/2 for second in the triple jump.
