Frank Rossi walked down the track’s straightaway before the game noticeably alone. The Whitman boys lacrosse coach worked the sidelines, the timeouts and the halftime, equally singular in his instruction.
Rossi’s assistant of six years, Dave Wilson, was not there. Not at his side to help out, to offer an additional set of eyes and some insight into the defense.
“We formed a good team,” Rossi said. “Now, we’ve lost that.”
Wilson, 37, is engaged in a battle far more important than anything that could take place on a lacrosse field or any other athletic venue. Wilson underwent surgery for a strangled intestine on April 19. His condition worsened, and Whitman athletic director Jim Wright said Wilson spent the last two weeks in a drug-induced coma.
Updates on his condition come from his family and got passed on to the players on the team and the people in the school and lacrosse community. Smithtown even gave Rossi a get well card for Wilson at a game last Tuesday.
“The kids love him, that’s the whole thing,” Wright said. “He’s strict, but he’s funny. He’s a lovable guy.”
Before last night’s game, a 10-6 loss to visiting Longwood, the 100 fans observed a moment of silence. Prior to that, Wright presented encouraging news. Wilson’s condition improved dramatically from the previous day. He was conscious again, Wright said.
Kip Lukralle already knew. Wilson has been Lukralle’s top assistant on the Northport football team for the past 14 years. He somehow managed to get in and see Wilson Friday night. Until then, only family members had been in his room at Huntington Hospital.
“You always hope for something positive,” Lukralle said. “But, until you see some sign of that, it’s rough.”
Wilson felt sick on Good Friday. The next day, April 19, he left Rossi to finish scouting the Northport-Lindenhurst game. He was in surgery that night.
Lukralle missed talking to Wilson at the Northport game by a few minutes. Lukralle and Wilson used to coach lacrosse together at Harborfields.
“He knew I was there, he nodded his head,” Lukralle said. “I said ‘Dave, did they tell you how our game went?’ He just nodded his head up and down.”
A clear sign of enjoyment for Wilson, knowing that Whitman, his team defeated Harborfields, his alma mater, 8-4, on April 25.
“We dedicated that one to him,” senior defenseman Sean Ostrower said. “Before the season, that was the game he said he wanted to win.”
Nha Phengthavone broke a tie at 6 with 9:12 left in the fourth for Longwood (3-10, 3-8 Division I). It was the first of four unanswered goals on five shots in a three-minute span for Longwood. Brian McQuade added four goals. Chris McCarthy led Whitman (3-10, 2- 9) with three goals and an assist. The senior attack had 10 goals in the three games since returning after a suspension.
Players will get over losing a lacrosse game. Anything more than that is not allowed.
“It was just a shock to us,” Ostrower said about first hearing the news. “There weren’t any signs. It hurts. He’s such a big part of our team. We’re all pulling for him.”
