A Fight to the Finish Likely for County Titles: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Andy Slawson contributed to this story. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 23 Dec 2002:

Mike Tutunjian of Longwood. Remember the name. Why? He was the only underclassman to win a county wrestling championship last February. For only the third time in 64 years of the county tournament, there is only one returning champion.

“It’s a topsy-turvy year throughout all six leagues,” Islip coach Joe Patrovich said. “There’s parity, competitiveness, however you want to spin it. There’s a ton of county finalists and place- winners coming back and that’ll make things very interesting.”

To be exact, there are nine county finalists looking for another shot at a county crown. There’s also sophomore transfer Tom Magnani, who finished second in the state at 103 pounds in Syracuse. Magnani left St. Anthony’s this fall and went back to Islip, where he competed in the county tournament as an eighth-grader.

“That’s a nice addition to our lineup without question,” Patrovich said. “He might put us over the top in the county tournament. We’re in the top three or four teams countywide. He’ll make a difference.”

Islip is in loaded Division IV with defending champion Huntington, Hauppauge, Kings Park and Westhampton. The Bucs return four county place-winners. The coach’s son, freshman Ryan Patrovich (112), who placed third in the county, leads the way with senior Gino Bartoli (sixth at 171) and junior Dan Petroro (fifth at 145). Coach Patrovich also expects senior Joe Esposito (160) to emerge as a serious contender at his weight.

Huntington won its fourth state title last year and has to replace three individual state champions. The Blue Devils have won 10 consecutive league dual- meet titles and 28 overall since 1972.

They’ve also won 64 consecutive dual meets, the second-longest streak in Suffolk history; a streak that could be in jeopardy when Huntington hosts Islip on Feb. 5.

“I’m not sure we can beat Huntington and I wouldn’t say we’re a favorite,” Patrovich said. “Huntington is always really tough.”

Islip is also at Hauppauge on Jan. 8, as the schedulemaker was not kind to the Bucs.

“This looks like it could be our strongest team in my seven years,” Patrovich said. “It should be a neat county tournament with some weights that will be really stacked.”

Riverhead is another newcomer to the upper echelon in Suffolk. The Blue Waves are deep after a third-place finish in last year’s county tournament – the school’s highest finish since 1963. They return all-county wrestlers Aaron Tyte (fifth at 103), Chris Raynor (fourth at 112) and Chris Darrow (fourth at 119), as well as a host of all-league wrestlers. The Blue Waves will try for their third straight League III tournament title.

League I looks to be as competitive as ever. Brentwood appears to have the inside track because of experience, but Sachem, Smithtown, Longwood, and defending Suffolk champion Floyd are all strong once again. Five coaches make their debuts this season in League I.

Consistency is what Northport’s been all about in League II. The Tigers look to win a fifth title in seven years. Amityville, with Romaine Malcolm (county runner-up at 130) and Mike Fraser (fifth at 145) should repeat in League V if the team stays healthy. With little depth, the Warriors have little room for error.
