Girls golf is on the rise on Long Island. Suffolk begins its third season of varsity competition while Nassau prepares for next year’s inaugural season.
“The overall popularity of golf has a lot do with it,” said Smithtown coach and Suffolk coordinator Tom Kane. “I would expect within a couple of years, we’ll have 20-25 teams.”
Bayport-Blue Point, LaSalle, Longwood, Commack and Sachem join the 14-team league this season. Bayport may be the strongest of the bunch with Lydia Holmberg returning after losing her sophomore season to injury. Holmberg played on the boys team as a freshman in 1999 and should be benefit from moving up to the red tees.
Defending champion Bay Shore graduated four players, but returns three All-League players in Amanda Arciero, Caitlin Fogarty and Alison Serigiano. County runner-up Half Hollow Hills returns four starters, including All-League selections Heidi Kim, Briana Lancia and Alisa Srivilasa. Smithtown, Sayville and Hauppauge also will contend.
