A Walk in the Park for Sachem’s Michta: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

Jason Molinet. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 16 Feb 2002:

Sachem sophomore Maria Michta is a star in an event most people snicker at or overlook completely. But the racewalk is an Olympic event, and that’s good enough for Michta.

Even though she took up the discipline just one year ago, the 15- year-old already has the nation’s fastest time in the 1,500-meter walk, according to Long Island Track and Field’s Michael Roth.

Michta walked her way to victory at the Suffolk indoor track and field individual championship/state qualifier Thursday night at Suffolk-West. Her time of 6 minutes, 57.27 seconds, was nearly 14 seconds better than runner-up Lauren Olivieri of Hauppauge, Michta’s training partner. And Michta did it despite achy bones and a headache.

“All I needed was a first- or second- or even third-place finish,” Michta said. “I knew I could do that.”

The top finishers advance to the state meet March 9 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Brentwood’s Yolanda Malcolm, who signed with Villanova, knows the Carrier Dome well. She won the 55 hurdles (8.64) for the third straight year, outdistancing the field in an event that’s nearly impossible to create separation.

Then Malcolm came back to spur Brentwood’s heart-stopping comeback in the 4×200 relay. Central Islip led the race until the final stretch when Malcolm, running anchor leg, closed the gap and won in 1:50.05.

“It felt like my hamstrings were going to pop, but I didn’t care,” Malcolm said of the do-or-die relay, from which only the winning team advances. “I said to myself, ‘They’re not getting this.’ We’ve worked too hard for this.”

Longwood‘s Lauren Farmer was another double winner, taking the 55 (7.48) and 300 (41.74). Perhaps the closest race of the night came in the 1,500, as Rocky Point sophomore Melissa Salerno (4:54.46) edged Half Hollow Hills senior Ashley Robinson by three hundreths of a second.

Shoreham-Wading River’s Lauren Biscardi, a freshman with promise, soared beyond all expectations in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches on her second attempt.

“Doing this event is relaxing,” Biscardi said. “You really don’t have to work at it that much. All I wanted to do was qualify for states.”
