HIGH SCHOOL / WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW / Veterans Give E. Islip A Chance to Repeat: [SUFFOLK Edition]

It would be easy for Harold Cooley to expect a repeat at the Suffolk girls bowling championships this season. After all, the East Islip coach has the nucleus of last year’s state championship squad returning to the lanes.
But despite having what other teams consider an advantage, Cooley insists the only goal his team takes to the wood this year is to return to the playoffs. And from there, anything can happen.
“I learned from a lot of good coaches that you never count your chickens before they hatch,” Cooley said. “You have to understand it doesn’t matter who’s the best team on paper, but who bowls well on that day. You have to take it one step at a time to make it to the playoffs first.”
Cooley’s team returns its magnificent seven, led by Jess Figueroa (190), Dana Holmes (185) and Marissa Chasnoff (181), who played key roles in securing last year’s county and state championships. Five of the top 10 bowlers in Suffolk are members of the team.
Although Bellmore lost standout bowler Cindy Zagorski to graduation, expect a well-balanced team led by Angela Consolino (179), Erica Lazarow (170) and Kristin Hall (165).
Northport will be led by Tara Mezur (163) who so far this season has made a 26-pin increase over her average last year. Teammates Jenna Sico (166) and Jaime Hessel will likely carry the rest of the load for Northport.
Longwood may prove to be the sleeper of the county led by third- year veteran Brigette Kimball (171) and Susan Pitka (162).
Middle Country is back with Teresa Castillano (183), while Sachem looks to have a strong season led by newcomer Cheryl Drusin (170).
Ward Melville is stocked with six seniors led by Shannon McCarren who has increased her 158 average by 19 points. Jessica Wilson (150) will make some noise for West Islip.
Bellport Rolls Over Longwood. Angela Consolinl rolled a high game of 235 in a 588 series and Jennifer Neumann had a 215 in a 566 series to lead Bellport past Longwood, 880-731, 836-729, 871-719. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 06 Dec 2000:
