C. Islip’s Williams Sprints to 55 Title: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
Liam McHugh. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 17 Feb 2001:
Oliver Williams Jr. comes out of the starting blocks as if he was shot from a pistol. In an instant, his body has gone from a crouched position to a few steps in front of his competition. From there, the Central Islip junior’s natural speed makes the rest of his race look painfully easy.
Thursday at the Suffolk boys track individual championships/state qualifier at Suffolk-West, Williams burst out to the lead and cruised to victory in the 55 meters in a swift 6.59 seconds.
Williams has the great start and perfectly effortless stride of an experienced sprinter. Which is why it comes as a surprise to many that Williams is competing in his first season of winter track, and only began running competitively last spring.
“He’s got such natural speed,” Central Islip coach Chris Pisano said. “We worked on his start every day.”
Although Williams credits his coach for the amazing strides he’s made in such a short time, he knows that credit also has to be given to the man from whom he got his blistering speed. “My father was a runner down in Jamaica, but never got to run in the U.S.,” Williams said. “He had to stay home and take care of the family.”
Williams and his family moved here when he was in seventh grade, and his father has been an inspiration to him. “He’s helped me a lot, and now I want to take it one step further and run in college,” Williams said.
Moving the focus to the field events, it’s common knowledge that shot putters are a strange breed. Some pace back and forth grunting and growling trying to psych themselves up, and others quietly put on a game face with eyes that appear the definition of focus. Both styles were on display at Suffolk-West.
“This is the only way I can compete,” said Middle Country’s Vincent Rucci, who at 5-8, 200, is considerably smaller than his opponents. “You’ve got to scream.”
Longwood‘s James Riley, who won the event with a throw of 54-3 1/ 2, takes a different route. Riley keeps the theatrics to a minimum and just goes about his business. “The yelling doesn’t bother me, but I don’t need it,” Riley said.
“The whole county makes fun of me for screaming,” said Rucci, who took second (51-6 1/2). “But its all about psyching yourself up.”
Southampton’s Trumaine Pendleton, last year’s spring state champion in the long jump, won the triple jump (46-6), but didn’t make the finals in the long jump. Smithtown’s Tom Skrivanek won the long jump (22-4).
The state meet will be March 10 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
