Slamon Sarwari and his Longwood teammates had to look no farther than their gymnasium walls for inspiration heading into yesterday’s Suffolk boys track team championships.
“When you walk in the gym,” he said, “all you see are track {championship} banners.”
But none since 1994 – a four-year drought which weighed heavily on this group of Lions.
“Our teams in the past have been so good,” said Sarwari, who was second in the 400 meters (50.7 seconds) and third in the 200 (22.8). “Today, it was first or nothing.”
Longwood, which was in third place after 13 events, picked up big points with Brett Wachter’s win in the shot put (56 feet, 5 3/4 inches), the first-place 4 x 100 relay (43.3) and strong efforts in the triple jump and pole vault to finish with 102 1/2 points and the Class A title at Patchogue-Medford. Centereach was second (84 points), buoyed by a one-two finish in the 1,600 walk by Patrick Ryan (6:29.9) and Tim Fay (6:38.2). Half Hollow Hills East was third (78) with a one-two in the 200 by Robert Key (22.4) and Jason Cooper (22.6).
The key to victory for Longwood was depth, especially in the field events. Tom Corso (12-0) and James Bresnahan (11-9) went second and third in the pole vault for 14 points. Chris Curate was second in the long jump (21-2 1/2) and third in the triple jump (43-10 1/2). D.J. Holmes had three fifth-place finishes in the triple, long and high jumps.
“I was very nervous, especially when {Centereach} scored 18 points in the racewalk,” Lions assistant coach Jerry Curley said. “But our kids stepped up.”

SPOTLIGHT:
REPORTED BY JOHN BOELL. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 17 June 1999:
Grade: Senior. Athletics: A brief disappointment became a new opportunity for Brett Wachter. The 6-5, 260-pounder made the most of an unexpected turn of events. Wachter was cut by the basketball team during his junior year, but decided to give winter track a shot. “I was a little disappointed I didn’t make {the basketball team},” Wachter said. “But there’s always something else to do. I thought I might be able to excel at {track}.” Has he ever. Wachter finished second in the shot put on Friday with a personal-best 57-5 1/4 and was sixth in the discus (153-7) at the state track and field championships in Kingston. The Suffolk shot put and discus champ heads to Raleigh tomorrow and Saturday for the national prep track & field championships at North Carolina State. “I know there will be kids throwing {the shot put} in the mid-60s and over 200 in the discus,” Wachter said. “But I’ll just go for a personal best and see what I get.” That approach has worked wonders for Wachter. “This year I’m more relaxed,” Wachter said. “Last year, I’d fail on a throw and I’d shut down. Now I don’t really feel any pressure. I just go for a personal best, throw against the tape measure, and not worry about anybody else.” Wachter, a tight end on the Lions’ Long Island Class I football championship team last year, begins physical training at West Point Prep in Ft. Monmouth, N.J., July 9. Academics: Wachter boasts a 3.9 GPA, an 1140 SAT and is ranked 84 out of 548 students (top 15 percent). From his coach: “He’s a totally different athlete this year,” Joe Reilly said. “He’s much more relaxed now . . . He’s a great kid and a hard worker. I couldn’t be any more happy that he had the chance to go states and do well.” Ambition: After a year at West Point Prep, Wachter hopes to attend West Point (Army), maintain his grades and make the football team as a defensive lineman. –
