” Dad gone it! When Longwood girls soccer coach Austin Manghan pointed to Jillian Raupp, saying he wanted her to take a penalty shot, the senior goalkeeper admits she was overcome by nerves.
The situation – which occurred with Longwood and Shoreham-Wading River tied at 1 in the second half of a non-league game on Saturday – seemed unreal to Raupp not only because she was currently in goal, her position for the past four years. The reason behind the nerves was that the opposing coach happened to also be her father, Rich Raupp. “I ran downfield to take the the shot,” Jillian said, “and he yelled, ‘If you score, there’s no dinner for a week.'” Jillian took the penalty shot, which was awarded after a hand ball was called in the box, and scored to give Longwood a 2-1 win. Jillian, who is considering Pace and hopes to play soccer next year, also made 17 saves to preserve the win for Longwood (4-9-1).
“She played outstanding,” said Rich, who is in his first year coaching Shoreham-Wading River (5-7-1) after spending five years as the assistant coach at St. Joseph’s (L.I.) College. “On the bus coming in, I tried telling the girls where she can be beat … We should’ve scored a lot more goals. She made some great saves.” After the game ended, Jillian ran directly for her father, and immediately jumped on him. “It was one of my best games,” Jillian said.
