There was plenty of competition in the Varsity B race, which was won by Clarke junior Danielle Jelley, who finished second behind Mastroianni in last year’s state public schools meet at New York Tech. Rocky Point junior Allison Hofmann almost caught Jelley, who was suffering a stitch in her side, at the finish line. Their times were 19:42.8 and 19:43.1, respectively.

“I was concentrating on changing my breathing instead of where my opponents were,” Jelley said. “I kind of hung on at the end.”

Patchogue-Medford junior Kate Wrinkle, last year’s Suffolk Class A runnerup, was third and Port Jefferson senior Jessica Edberg, the defending county Class C champion, was fourth.

Longwood (62) was the team winner of the B race, defeating St. Anthony’s (86) and Rocky Point (88). Bay Shore won the C race over Tottenville (Staten Island), 65-107.  Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 27 Sep 1998:
