DQ Gives Title to Sachem: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Jim Baumbach. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 09 Feb 1999:

History suggested that the Suffolk girls indoor track large school championships, held Sunday night at the University at Stony Brook, were going to go down to the wire between Bay Shore and Sachem. Bay Shore entered with a 3-2 lead over Sachem in indoor titles.

History was right. Only this time, the events that led to Sachem’s 98-96 win over Bay Shore were unlike anything either team’s coach had ever seen. A bit of misfortune for Sachem in the 4 x 400-meter relay, the next-to-last race of the meet, began the string of odd occurrences.

Bay Shore’s Julianne Mahoney, Laurice Walker, Shayna Staton and Kellie Castro won the 4 x 400 in 4:09.7. Sachem did not finish the race because its second runner, Maureen Schaub, had to be helped off the track after a hard fall that bruised her left shoulder and left knee. “I believe she got her feet inadvertently clipped by another runner,” Sachem coach Alex Young said.

As a result, the Marauders turned a 92-86 deficit into their first lead, 96-92. That also meant Sachem needed to finish two spots higher than Bay Shore in the 4 x 200 relay for a tie, and three spots higher for the win.

Guess what? Sachem’s team finished fourth in 1:54, Bay Shore did not place.

Tie score. Or was it?

As Young, Bay Shore coach Lisa Vickers and several others waited at the scorer’s table for the expected official tie score, the sound of an irate Frank Labianca, coach of Ward Melville, turned everyone’s heads. Labianca was disputing an apparent disqualification of his first-place 4 x 200 team.

Wait a second . . . if Ward Melville were disqualified, then Sachem would move up a spot in the race, giving the Flaming Arrows six points for a third-place finish instead of four for a fourth-place finish, giving them the win. “That’s what everybody immediately thought,” Vickers said.

Within minutes, referee Mark Robinson walked over to the scorer’s table and gave the official word.

“The anchor leg ran into the Half Hollow Hills runner, altering her course,” said Robinson, whose job is to listen to the official who saw the infraction and then make a final decision. The disqualification gave Sachem the win, avenging last year’s 108-101 loss to Bay Shore.

“We’ve had close meets before,” said Bay Shore’s Vickers, who had predicted a one-point Sachem win. “It’s just unfortunate that it had to end in a disqualification. I don’t feel like we lost.”

“I look at it like this: This meet ended in a tie,” said Young, who thought the meet was going to end in a tie at 100. “It was 96-96 except for a disqualification.”

Competitors on both teams relayed the same sentiments toward the meet – on the track it’s serious, but all is forgotten off it. “As much as I want Sachem to win, it doesn’t affect our relationship with the girls on Bay Shore,” said senior Jeanna Composti, who won the 1,000 (3:00.9). “We are all very good friends regardless of the outcome.”

Sachem’s Denise Raab enjoyed her 18th birthday by winning the 55 (7.2), 55 high hurdles (8.6) and the long jump (17-4 1/2).

In the small schools championships, which took place before the large schools, Shoreham-Wading River (83) easily won, outscoring second-place Kings Park by 27 points. Flora Sapienza won the 55 high hurdles (8.6) and Nicole Barbante won the 300 (41.9) for the Wildcats, who scored in 12 of the 15 events.
