Nunez Wins Memorial Meet. Mt. Sinai senior Jackie Nunez ran the fastest time of all girls (20:13) at the 10th annual Jim Smith Memorial Meet at Sunken Meadow State Park. The fastest boy was Longwood senior Jason Prieto, who covered the 3.1-mile course in 17:06. More than 1,000 runners from 55 schools competed in the season-opening event. Longwood senior Jason Prieto, the runnerup in last year’s Suffolk Class A championship race, ran the day’s best time of 16:28.6 and won the Varsity A race. Smithtown senior Jason Borbet, the third-place finisher behind graduated Jason Soricelli of Middle Country last fall, won the Varsity B in 16:46.5, the exact time as Varsity C winner Pat Gildea of Sachem. In the closest race of the day, Gildea outsprinted Bellmore JFK senior Salvatore Nastasi, the defending Nassau champion, who was second in 16:49.5, just three seconds behind.
