Ask Austin Manghan III what his life would be like without soccer and he’ll hesitate while trying to fathom such a void.

Ask him which week of the season is the biggest for his Shoreham-Wading River girls soccer team, though, and you’ll have an answer in a second. With a game yesterday against rival Rocky Point and one tomorrow against last year’s playoff nemesis, Glenn, this week holds more angst for Manghan than any other.

Manghan replaced his sister, Lisa, who wasn’t able to coach because her job didn’t allow enough time, right before this season commenced. Lisa, at a new job, is now coaching the girls junior high team at Longwood. The Manghans’ father, Austin Manghan Jr., is the girls varsity coach at Longwood.

As much as soccer defines the family – “That’s the only thing we care about,” Austin Manghan III joked – this week defines much of the Wildcats’ season. And with a 2-1 win over the visiting Eagles yesterday, the season is shaping up as a success.

“This is one game both teams have always gotten up for,” Manghan said. “Even when I played {he graduated from Shoreham-Wading River in ’86} I loved the rivalry.”

Last year’s Wildcats won the League VI championship, but were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by Glenn. This year, Manghan thinks, will be different.

“In the past three years {they} dominated League VI,” he said, noting that blowouts didn’t prepare them for the playoffs. ‘`Every game we’re in now is a tough game. I think that helps us.”

The Wildcats are 5-2 and in first place in Division III because the Eagles, despite being 5-1-1, tied Sayville, a team the Wildcats beat. Oct. 8
