Longwood Shocks Brentwood. Everyone expected Sachem, Brentwood, Smithtown and Patchogue to be in the League I mix. A sleeper? Maybe Connetquot, with one of the county’s best keepers in Mike Behonick. But Longwood, which went 1-13-1 last season, is 5-2 and 2-2 in League I after its stunning 4-3 win over Brentwood (4-3, 1-2). Michael Dworczyk opened the scoring seven minutes into the second half and Anthony Semitikolos scored off an indirect kick from Dean Emma (two assists) one minute later to lift Smithtown (6-1-1) to a 2-0 win over Longwood (2-5-1). Brian Raeihle (four) and Tom Allen combined for seven saves in the shutout for the Bulls, who qualified for the playoffs and remained one-half game ahead of Sachem in first place. The wish list isn’t complete quite yet.

Yes, coach Frank Schmidt’s boys soccer team at Sachem clinched a playoff berth yesterday with a 2-0 win over Longwood (2-6-1) in a League I game. But Sachem hit the crossbar three times in doing so, highlighting several missed opportunities.

“We’re playing well, but we need to convert those golden chances once we get into the playoffs,” said Schmidt, whose team improved to 6-1-1. “I just think we need to step it up a bit if we want to make noise in the playoffs.”

Brian Christie made plenty of noise yesterday, blasting a 30-yard score with 10 minutes left in the first half. Paul Soccoccio added another off a deflection midway through the second half.

Sachem keeper Justin Varrone (six saves) made two key stops early in the first half and earned his fifth shutout.
