Boys and Girls Cross Country
Bay Shore, the state meet runner-up the last two seasons, is poised for a big year with four All-State runners returning. Seniors Emily Germano and Chante Daily and sophomores Laura Mina and Melissa Malakoff anchor the two-time defending county Class A champs. “I’m very excited,” coach Luis Pena said. “Some good things will be coming our way with this group.” Throw in All-State honorable mention senior Erin Hayes and senior Melissa Keckler and you have a core of six All-County runners who led Bay Shore to a final ranking of ninth in the USA Today / Foot Locker national poll.
Sachem and Longwood also will be strong. Brentwood senior Danielle Safran has won the last two county Class A individual titles. Miller Place and Shoreham-Wading River are the Class B favorites, and two-time defending individual champ Janelle Kraus makes Shelter Island / Southold / Pierson a Class C threat.
Middle Country (a combination of Newfield and Centereach) will likely repeat as Suffolk Class A boys champs. All-State junior Jason Soricelli finished sixth at the county individual Class A championship and could push defending champ Anthony Famiglietti of Patchogue-Medford for the title. Also returning are seniors Mark Granshaw and Adam Muhleman and junior Kyle Kurtz, all All-County runners. Competition will come from Sachem and Patchogue-Medford. Last year’s top Class B teams, Mt. Sinai and Bayport-Blue Point, should battle again while Stony Brook is poised to take the Class C title from Mattituck. Sept. 8
