HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK Umpire’s Bright Decision: [NASSAU Edition]
Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 30 Mar 1995
This much we know ! – umpires and coaches always have disagreed over balls and strikes. They’ve had differences over rule interpretations and calls on the bases. But umpire Bill Stuart broke new ground at the Newfield: /: Longwood girls softball game Tuesday. ” Stuart called the game because of sunlight. That’s right. Not darkness ! – too much sun. ” 3″The sun was setting right behind the batter and thefirst baseman was blinded,2″ Stuart said. 3″As we warmed up for the sixth inning, the Longwood first baseman said the sun was real nasty and that she had difficulty seeing.2″ ” At that point, Stuart, the field umpire, ended the game and cited a dangerous condition ! – glaring sunlight. Both coaches were upset at the decision. Despite trailing 13-1, Longwood coach Bill Anderson wanted to complete the game. Newfield coach Bill King felt the same way. King’s team led by 12 runs as Dawn Wainwright had three hits, including a home run, and five RBI to back the five-hit pitching of Christine Lombardo. ” 3″The other coach {Anderson} said he’d replace the first baseman and we’d continue to play but the ump shook my hand and took off,2″ King said. 3″I couldn’t believe it.2″ ” Stuart said: 3″The condition wasn’t going to improve. And if it did and the sun set . . . then we would have called it on darkness.
