Longwood Posts Win Over Huntington: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Brian Grazidei and Rich Neuman scored 59 seconds apart midway through the third quarter to give Longwood (9-5) a 7-5 lead in its 8-6 win over Huntington yesterday in a pivotal Division I boys lacrosse game. Grazidei’s goal was unassisted at 4:52 of the third, and Tom Dunn fed Neuman with the eventual game-winner after the ensuing faceoff. Todd Nolan and Tom Baker scored twice for Longwood and Mike Rodriguez added two assists. Bart Orr scored four goals for Huntington (9-5). Steven Gordon made 16 saves for Longwood, stopping a breakaway late in the third quarter to preserve the lead.

Richie Neuman scored on an assist from Jim Bradley 2:40 into the third quarter as Longwood (11-5) to a 4-2 lead in its 6-3 win over Smithtown (11-6). The Lions’ defenseman Mike Rodriguez threw a shot 80 yards down the field with the Smithtown goaltender Michael Guistiniani out of the net to tie the score at 2 at 4:47 into the second quarter May 26

In his first game back from a serious knee injury, Negus (two goals, one assist) had a hand in three of the Patriots’ four first-quarter goals as Ward Melville defeated Longwood, 15-1, in the Suffolk County boys Class A semifinal at Kings Park. Ward Melville (17-1) will face Sachem in the Class A championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hofstra.

“I was a little nervous,” Negus said yesterday, after playing in his first game in almost a month. Negus had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee. “We worked hard and did what we had to do to win.”

The senior midfielder, who plans to play for the University of Massachusetts in the fall, originally sprained the knee in a preseason scrimmage. Negus played 10 league games before the surgery caused him to miss the last six. An anterior cruciate ligament tear awaits repair in the offseason.

Ward Melville coach Joe Cuozzo saw a difference in his team without Negus. “We missed him,” Cuozzo said. “He really gives {the opposition} something else to worry about.”

Negus wasted no time getting on the board, with an unassisted goal just under two minutes into the game. Longwood (10-7)held its own for most of the first quarter, but as the quarter began to wind down, the dam broke.  Scott Weber scored the first of his game-high five goals on a feed from Jed DeWick (four assists) to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead at 4:18 of the first. Fifty-two seconds later, Negus found Matt Roberts (three goals) in front of the net for a third goal, and Negus later added a fourth (unassisted) for Ward Melville with 42 seconds left in the quarter to build a 4-0 lead.

The Patriots enjoyed a 9-0 lead at the half. Weber sandwiched a pair between sophomore Mike Monfett’s two goals, and Monfett closed the half with his third goal on a long shot from downfield that rolled in at the :24 mark as Lions goalie Steve Gordon (12 saves) charged out to try to make the stop. By then, Longwoodcoach Al Schroeder had seen enough.

“They’re a fabulous program,” Schroeder said of Ward Melville, which won its 20th consecutive league title last week on the way to its 14th consecutive Suffolk County final. “We’re very young. We have a few years to go before we get to their caliber.” Longwood has made the playoffs three of the past five years, including a semifinal appearance in 1994.

The Lions finally broke the shutout in the fourth quarter, as Jarrod Rostron flipped a shot past Patriots goalie Brian Gallozzi (seven saves), but the score was 15-1, and the damage was done.

“I’m pretty confident in our team,” Negus said. “As long as we work hard and play together, we can beat anybody.”

For Cuozzo, who tacked on win No. 507 to his career total, it was a good measure of his team. “It was a great win to go into the playoffs with,” he said. “The loss to St. Anthony’s {May 20} really woke us up.”
