D’Abbraccio’s double was the only hit allowed by losing pitcher Jim Schneider, who walked four and struck out three. Longwood‘s Tom Nielsen threw a complete-game shutout and missed a no-hit bid when the Red Raiders’ Eric Rossy hit a two-out single in the sixth. Nielsen finished with 10 strikeouts and a one-hitter.

In League I, Longwood defeated Floyd, 14-3, and clinched its first playoff berth since 1978, according to coach Bob Popko. Eric Bardiguez’ grand slam in the third inning gave Longwood (10-3 in league) a 7-1 lead. Bob Orsino had four hits, including a home run for Longwood, which also received a homer from Dave Farber.
