Bayport-Blue Point and Longwood have thrown in the towel, too – Longwood will be starting its fourth consecutive year on austerity. “When you get conditioned to doing this, and the district has been conditioned, you go along pretty well,” said Longwood Schools Superintendent Nick Muto. “With the economic climate the way it is, almost everyone has got to make some sacrifices and do what they can.” Longwood, where students are widely spread out, passed a separate transportation proposition to bus all students and has booster clubs to help support athletics.
MIDDLE ISLAND / Cheerleaders to Meet Clinton In the time-honored tradition of American athletics, the varsity cheerleading squad from Longwood High School that won a national championship in December is being rewarded this month with a trip to the White House.
“They call it a presidential moment,” said Donna Beary, the coach of the varsity squad, which will meet at the high school in Middle Island at 11 p.m. on May 24, then drive overnight to Washington, D.C., to make an 8 a.m. appointment with President Bill Clinton.
Both the 17-member varsity and the 22-member junior varsity will make the trip. After the photo opportunity with Clinton, they will get a tour of the White House and the sights in the capital.
The team also will present Clinton with a Longwood T-shirt and matching cap. “Hope he jogs in it,” said Beary. –Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 13 May 1994:
