Runs to Remember Flying’ Weeks wins 600: [SUFFOLK Edition]

By John Valenti. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 16 Feb 1994:

Having seen the race with his own eyes, Newfield football coach Robert Kerr turned to a few of the other interested and said simply, “That’s flying.” Who could disagree? Shannon Weeks, all of a 10th-grader at Sachem, had just gone 1:34.6 in the 600-meter final at the Suffolk girls indoor track championships yesterday at Stony Brook. “Flying,” Kerr said, again.

And, with good reason. Because, what Weeks did yesterday was run the second-fastest time in the nation this season and the fastest time ever in Suffolk, breaking the mark set by Valerie Bertrand, then of Newfield, in 1986 – a race Kerr had seen run.

Still, one didn’t need to have seen Bertrand to appreciate what Weeks did yesterday, coming from off the shoulder of Bay Shore runner Erin Hayes at the bell to take command on the final lap. Hayes finished in 1:36.6, certainly no slouch. And, as Sachem coach Alex Young said, “Having Erin Hayes in her heat certainly made Shannon run better. Running with good runners pushes you and Shannon was pushed. She went with her, she hung with her and, when it was time to make her move, she made it.”

The win sets the stage for an intriguing meeting at the indoor state track championships on March 5 at Cornell University in Ithaca. There, Weeks figures to meet the holder of the fastest time in the nation this season, Jawauna McMullen of Christ the King in Queens, who has run 1:33.7. The two will also meet the following weekend, at the U.S. Junior National Championships in Syracuse.

“It should be interesting,” Young said.

There was a lot that was interesting yesterday. If it wasn’t the performance of Crystal Brooks of Floyd, who won the 55-meter dash in 7.1 seconds, it was the showing of Erin Dolan of Longwood, who won the 1,000 in 3:07.9. And, certainly, no one was more surprised than Chante Daily, the sophomore from Bay Shore, who looked over her shoulder coming out of the final turn in the 1,500 only to be shocked by what she saw. “There was no one else there,” she said. “I thought everyone would have been closer. I mean, there was some good competition out there. But I looked and no one was there.”

Daily, who had won here as an eighth-grader but was second last season, won in 4:48.9. Kristin Fosdick of Longwood, who won the event last year, was second this time around. In 4:56.8.

Nicole Vickers of Sachem was the lone double winner. She won the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 7 1/2 inches. She won the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 5 inches. Karen Labbadia of Sachem won the 3,000 in 10:32.8.

“Certainly, she helped Shannon with her endurance,” Young said. “They’ve worked hard these past few weeks and that can only help Shannon.” How much was evident yesterday. How much more remains to be seen. “We’re hoping,” Young said.
