Curious Georges Win: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
By J.P. Pelzman. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 06 June 1993:
On the surface, it seemed pretty simple. Diana George and Tracie George, both of Longwood, finished 1-2 in the 200 meters at the county girls track championships yesterday at Bellport.
The two Georges are sisters, right? Wrong. Well, then they must be cousins, of course. No. Although they are both seniors, Diana is Tracie’s aunt.
“People always think we’re sisters,” Diana George said, laughing. “We always have to explain to them that we’re not.” In fact, Tracie, whose mother is Diana’s sister, was born two months before Diana.
Much easier to understand was Longwood‘s continued domination of the team standings. With one event still remaining, Longwood has already clinched its third straight team championship, with 103 points. Half Hollow Hills is second with 64. The high jump wasn’t contested because the bar was broken during the boys competition. The high jump will take place 3 p.m. tomorrow at Bellport.
Longwood had two individual double-winners. Diana George won both the 200 (25.6) and 100 (12.1), and Erin Dolan won the 1,500 in 4:38.3, and won the 800 in 2:14.6. Tracie George won the long jump (18-5 1/2), and teammate Alicia Conquest won the discus (126-0). Longwood also won both the 4 x 800 relay (9:40.2) and the 4 x 100 (50.1).
“All season long, I was never satisfied,” Diana George said. “Today, I’m satisfied.” With good reason. Not only did George win the 100, which she considers her best event, she also took first in the 200, which surprised her. “I was running in the 200 just to score {team} points,” she said. She will run in the 100 at the state meet in Kingston Friday and Saturday, but will skip the 200.
Dolan also was happy with her performance, and with the cool, damp weather. “I like these kind of days,” Dolan said. “On the hot days, I tend to get dehydrated.” Dolan’s times in both the 800 and 1,500 were personal bests, and her time of 4:38.3 in the 1,500 is the best in the state this season.
“This season has been my best ever,” said Dolan, a junior. “Some distance girls are better when they’re young, and then they go downhill from there. I’m happy that I keep improving.”
“We work the girls hard all season,” Longwood coach Chris Duffner said, “but we back off about a week before the county championships. This is the time of the year when the girls should be peaking and the results speak for themselves.”
“The coaches are very supportive,” Diana George said. “Everybody’s accepted just the same no matter what time you run.”
“We’re really like a family,” Dolan said. “We all try to stick together. We’re all happy when someone else wins.”
Said Duffner, “We try to create that atmosphere.” Obviously, they’ve also created an atmosphere of success.
Rose Bryan of Whitman was the only other double-winner. She took first in the triple jump (36-11) and the 100 hurdles (14.9). Jeanne Oehrlein of West Islip won the pentathlon with a score of 3,331, which is a county record, according to West Islip coach John McDonough.
