Rain Interrupts Meet: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
By Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 06 June 1993
Inclement weather interrupted three events and made it difficult for all competitors yesterday at the Suffolk Track and Field championships at Bellport High School.
Three-time defending team champion Longwood holds a 66-50 edge over Whitman heading into the final three events. The weather forced postponement of the high jump, triple jump and pole vault. Those athletes will return to Bellport tomorrow for the finals.
“Considering the cold and the rainy conditions, the times and distances are very impressive,” said Centereach coach Bob Burkley. “These aren’t exactly spring-like weather conditions.”
The high winds and slippery footing stopped the competition at the pole vault pit. The high jump bar broke and no replacement was available. The rain came down so hard during the finals for the triple jump that officials called for a stoppage in that event for safety precautions.
Prior to the heavy rainfall, Whitman junior Greg Hines kept the Wildcats in the team race with victories in the 110 high hurdles (13.7) and 400 intermediate hurdles (53.0). Hines tied a personal best in the 110 HH and broke the county meet record (13.8) set by Luis Pena of Bay Shore in 1979 and tied by Joe Galeano of Centereach in 1987. Whitman coach Kevin Johnson confirmed that Hines will bypass the state track championships to compete in the National Scholastic Championships at UCLA on June 11-12.
“He met the qualifying standard in both hurdle events,” said Johnson. “And as far as we know he still has the fastest time in the country in the 400 hurdles. Greg’s looking forward to running against the higher level of competition.”
Hines has not had anyone close to him in either of the hurdle events and the challenge at UCLA could push him to even better times.
“We’ll just say he’s ready for bigger and better things,” Johnson said. “We’re excited about the meet.”
The high jump will be the pivotal event for the team title. Longwood has top-seeded Andre Wacasey, but he may have lost his edge when he sprained his ankle playing basketball on Thursday. That could open the door and give fourth-seeded Morris Scott of Whitman a shot at the upset. Only three of the 15 competitors cleared the opening height due to the weather.
The weather had little effect on LaSalle’s Peter Lee. The 6-5 senior broke the pentathlon scoring record, winning with a total of 3,470. He surpassed the mark of 3,390 set by John Morgan of Centereach in 1988.
Lee was consistent through all five events. He had a personal best in the shot put (43-8, second place), ran a solid hurdles (15.3, third place) and placed second in the 1,500 (4:33). He tied for first in the high jump (6-1) and took third in the long jump (20-0). “He did everything well and hopes this performance can help him get an athletic scholarship,” said LaSalle coach Sean McGinty.
