Sayville and Longwood High Schools have been forced to postpone their interscholastic athletic programs for the second time this month because of another measles outbreak at the two schools, according to Cathy Gallagher, executive director of Suffolk athletics. She said both schools will have to postpone all events until April 30.

Gallagher said her office was notified yesterday by Longwood athletic director Don Webster and a secretary to Sayville athletic director Dick Solby, who was out of town. She did not know how many cases were reported at each school. Both schools were permitted to resume their programs Tuesday following a two-week layoff when the outbreak was initially reported April 7. On Tuesday, Longwood played a varsity baseball game against Commack and the varsity lacrosse team played Connetquot. Longwood also played baseball and softball yesterday.

“I’ll lay money it won’t be the last outbreak in those two districts,” Gallagher said. “If we are going into May, we may have a serious problem trying to reschedule contests. They will have so many games to reschedule and will probably have to schedule doubleheaders to make them up.” – Jim Barbanell
