Ward Melville got a scare at Longwood before escaping with a 59-58 League I victory over the winless Lions yesterday in boys basketball. The Patriots’ Jerome White sank two free throws with two seconds left to give his team its fifth win in the past six games, four of them decided by a total of six points. Joe Martin’s layup with 1:50 remaining gave Sachem a 70-69 lead in its 75-72 win over Longwood. Twenty seconds later, Quincy Coleman, who scored 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds, sank two free throws to give the Flaming Arrows a 72-69 cushion.

Matt McMurray scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half to help Brentwood overcome a 35-25 deficit . Longwood snapped an eight-game losing streak in registering its first League I win, a 62-53 victory over Floyd.
