Longwood Pins Down Victory:

By John Valenti. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 19 Jan 1991

It is a series that long has been filled with excitement, and yet mired in controversy. In years past, there have been disputes over alleged discrepancies in the running time on the match clock, as well as meets decided in the waning moments of the final match.

And history repeated itself last night when Sachem and Longwood got together on the wrestling mats.

Three years ago, Longwood won, 20-19. Two years ago, Sachem won a home meet when Duvalle Coleman of Longwood lost a heavyweight bout on a disputed reversal as time expired – or, as some later suggested, after time expired. Last season, Longwood emerged with a two-point victory.

So, it was of little surprise when the latest dual meet between the teams ended last night the way most of the meets between these teams have ended – on the outcome of the final bout.

This time, Longwood won, 24-21, as Nick Hall pinned Kevin Mongiello at 23 seconds of the first period of his heavyweight match before a standing-room-only crowd of about 1,100 at Sachem.

“I just had to pin him,” Hall said. “I knew that I had to pin him. We won on the last match last year and I knew we could – I knew we would – do it again here.” Of course, this meet was anything but mundane.

There was the dazzling escape by Jim Missale of Longwood with nine seconds left in the third period that gave him a 1-0 decision over Rob Harris at 98 pounds to start the meet. There was the victory by Sachem’s Sean O’Hara by technical fall over Chris Loquercio with 3:29 left to give Sachem a 13-3 advantage.

But, after Sachem built a 16-10 lead, Longwood came back.

After Idris Abdul-Rasheed earned an 8-4 decision over Jim Saladino, Kerry McCoy of Longwood managed a key 7-3 decision over John Aebly, who had beaten him last year in the league championships.

Then Hall made quick work of Mongiello.

“Every year, it seems to come down to the heavyweight bout,” Sachem coach Jack Mahoney said. “He {Aebly} knew we had to be up by at least seven points before Hall took the mat to have a chance to win. We sent a good kid out there. But that kid is going to be a state champion, and so what can you do?”

As Longwood coach Mike Picozzi said, “Every time we wrestle them, it seems to come out this way – down to the end. I knew it would be like that, because they really have no weaknesses. We had figured {the meet} out on paper and we figured it would come down to that last match. But we knew it would be tough. I’m just glad this is over.” Longwood 24, Sachem 21

HIGH SCHOOLS A Thrilling Meet to the Finish:

By Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 28 Jan 1991

From the first match to the last, the Longwood-Sachem dual meet lived up to its billing as the wrestling event of the season. It had exciting, close matches and a dramatic ending. When Longwood heavyweight Nick Hall pinned Sachem’s Kevin Mongiello in 23 seconds in the last match, it gave Longwood a 24-21 comeback victory.

“This is a key Long Island and state matchup,” Sachem athletic director Tom Sabatelle said. “The spectators and both communities got everything from the match that was anticipated.”

Advance tickets sold out in two days. Tight security made the event run smoothly. And Section XI selected 22-year veteran referee Tom Riccio to handle what many considered the toughest assignment of the season.

Meet highlights included:

Longwood sophomore Jim Missale’s third-period escape with nine seconds left for a 1-0 win over Rob Harris (98). It gave Longwood a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Matt Simonton (112) saved Longwood two team points in a 10-0 loss to the more experienced John Jaeger, a senior. Simonton’s avoiding a pin helped Longwood as Sachem got four team points instead of a possible six. Sachem led 7-3 instead of possibly 9-3.

Sachem junior James Christopher (126) head-locked defending county champ Chris Conway, tossed him to his back and made his 16-5 deficit 16-10 with a five-point move. It wiped out Conway’s shot at a technical fall in an 18-10 victory. A technical fall would have given Longwood six team points. Instead, Conway’s win gave Longwood four team points.

Sachem’s Tim Godoy beat defending county champion Jason Burke, 7-2, at 138 and gave Sachem a 16-10 lead.

Longwood coach Mike Picozzi juggled his lineup, putting Junius Gradney at 145 and moving Anthony Camisa to 155. Gradney and Camisa can wrestle either weight. Gradney got the opening takedown and wrestled John Phillips to a 2-2 tie. Camisa dropped an 8-2 decision to undefeated Jason Kraft (13-0). Instead of losing a possible nine team points, Longwood lost only three points. Sachem led 21-12 with three matches left.

Finally, there was Mongiello, a 180-pound senior, who went after defending county champion Hall aggressively with Sachem leading the match 21-18. “We knew what he was up against,” Sachem coach Jack Mahoney said. “But to last a minute he would have had to shake Hall’s hand, run up the bleachers, down the bleachers, around the gym and back.”

Instead, Mongiello moved into Hall and was tossed to his back for a pin. “I was looking up at Dan Mayo {a former state champion from Sachem} in the bleachers to come out,” Mahoney said with a laugh. “Then we could have squeaked it out.” Dedicated family

Longwood Wrestler Hungry:

Nick Hall has had trouble sleeping at night for more than a week. The Longwood heavyweight’s thoughts are dominated by the events that transpired in his last three appearances in the Suffolk County wrestling tournament.

And, all of them leave a bad taste in his mouth.

“I remember all of it like it was yesterday,” he said. “But now it’s my time and I won’t be denied.” In 1988, as everyone chose to leave the 177-pound weight class to get away from Comsewogue’s Adam Mariano, the freshman Hall remained and made it to the final, where Mariano beat him. Afterward, Hall called it a worthwhile experience – something he would have done again.

“I’m not afraid of anybody,” Hall, now a senior, said yesterday. In 1989, Hall suffered a severe groin pull and dropped a 5-4 decision to county champ Dean Morrison (167) of Copiague in a semifinal match. Despite the painful injury, he finished third.

In 1990, Hall seemed on his way to the state tournament with a 27-0 record and a county championship. But his mother took ill and he chose to stay home and care for her. He called it his “first priority.”

In all three cases, Hall was a victim of circumstance.

This year, however, Hall is making victims of his heavyweight opponents.Hall has pinned 19 of 20 foes, including six in under 30 seconds. His closest match was 12-3 against Ossining’s Scott Roe.

“I have all of this anxiety built up,” he said. “I lay down and all of this energy keeps me up. I keep thinking, `Okay, what’s going to happen this year?’ “

With opening-round pins in 1:07 and 44 seconds, Hall cruised into this morning’s semifinal against Bellport’s Matt Neuss.

“They can’t line up guys fast enough,” Hall said. “I’m so pumped. I’ve waited much too long to wrestle at the states. I can’t wait.”

Hall’s impatience is understandable. The promise he showed as a ninth grader never really has been fulfilled.

But it may be that Hall’s time finally has arrived.

“There’s this emptiness that makes me feel like no one knows who Nicky Hall really is,” he said. “I want people to remember me as someone who worked hard to get a state championship, rather than someone who could have and didn’t.”

Four of the tournament’s top-seeds lost in quarterfinal bouts.

Centereach’s Craig Furrer (145) erased a 3-1 deficit in the third period to beat Sachem’s John Phillips, 4-3.

Patchogue-Medford’s Orlando Troche (112) beat Newfield’s Max Bracero, 10-6.

At 98, eighth-seeded Matt Marks of Kings Park upended Shoreham-Wading River’s Joe Gorsky, 11-6, in overtime. Brentwood’s Steve Simon (167) came out of the unseeded bracket to beat Lindenhurst’s Chris Aliani, 11-0.

HIGH SCHOOLS Upsets Rule Longwood’s Mat Three unseeded wrestlers reach Suffolk finals:

By Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 24 Feb 1991

The Suffolk County wrestling championships took on a new face this year at Longwood High School. Oh sure, Longwood and Sachem waged what seems to be an annual battle for the county team championship. But the unusual and unpredictable events of the past two days threw most of the weight classes into a chaotic scramble.

“This will go down as one of the most competitive tournaments we’ve ever had,” said Bob Schuster, president of the Suffolk County Coaches Association. “The kids are so even, no one knows what’s going to happen.”

Predictability and top seeds that have held close to form over the past few years were thrown out the window. Only four of the weight classes saw the top two seeds make it to the final round. Seven of the top-seeded wrestlers were forced into the wrestlebacks and three of the unseeded made the finals.

The most interesting matchup will be at 138 where Sachem’s Tim Godoy and Longwood‘s Jason Burke, the defending county champ, will meet for the third time this season – with both winning once.

Burke’s 3-2 League I title win forced Godoy to qualify through a tougher outbracket. The unseeded Godoy has been most impressive using a variety of mat techniques to gain two superior decisions and a rousing pin in 5:59 over Floyd’s Pete Gillen in the semis.

Godoy is one of five Sachem wrestlers in the finals. For a shot at the team title, all of them need to win. First-place Longwood holds a 21 1/2-point lead and has qualified seven of eight semifinalists into the finals. For Sachem to overhaul Longwood, five of its seven finalists must lose.

“We’re in the driver’s seat,” said Longwood coach Mike Picozzi. “We had some real gutty performances in the semis from {Erik} Farkas and {Chris} Conway.”

Conway, one of Longwood‘s three defending county champions fell behind 4-0 to Lindenhurst’s Mike Mannarino in the 126-pound semifinal but came back for a 7-5 win in the round’s most exciting bout.

“I knew he was very aggressive from a scrimmage earlier this year,” said the 18-0 Conway. “This should have been the final. We both let it all out on the mat.”

Conway will meet Rocky Point’s Chad Henkin (34-0) in the final. Henkin or teammate Chris Wyllie (155) could become the first champ ever at the school.

“We have as good a shot as we’ve ever had,” said Rocky Point coach Robin Winkel.

Deer Park’s Jack Magnani (98) could become the first county champ for his school since 1985 when Ray Downey captured the league, county and state most outstanding wrestler awards in his march to the state title.

“First time in six years we’ve had a kid make the final,” said Deer Park coach Ed Luksik, who has eight county titlists in 29 years. “I remember this feeling. It feels good.”

HIGH SCHOOLS Longwood Wrestler Wins State:

By Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 04 Mar 1991

Longwood senior Nick Hall is a take-charge type of person. He rarely makes mistakes, and he’s used to pressure. Saturday night, the pressure was on Hall as he was Long Island’s last shot at winning a state title at the New York State wrestling championships at Onondaga War Memorial.

Like so many times in his career, Hall didn’t disappoint his teammates. He capped a brilliant career with a first-period pin of Chenango Fork’s Joe Walker in 1:39 for the heavyweight title. Had Hall lost, it would have marked the first time in the 29-year history of the tournament that Long Island failed to crown a champion.

Not even Walker’s 27-0 record, which included 25 pins, fazed Longwood‘s first state champion.

“He’s gone through some extreme personal turmoil and this is the most joyous moment of his life,” said Longwood coach Mike Picozzi, who guided the Suffolk sectional team to a third-place finish. “His longtime goal is finally fulfilled.”

Hall’s three pins and a 4-1 victory over Williamsville South’s Kevin Brinkworth, who will attend Miami on a football scholarship, in the semifinals earned him the most outstanding wrestler award. He is the first heavyweight to win the award since 1970.

“This is the happiest day of my life,” said Hall (28-0). “Last year, these were the saddest days of my life when I elected to stay home with my mom, who was sick. Now I’m going to call her and we’re going to enjoy this moment together.”

As Hall left the arena, he was handed a letter from his mom, who was unable to make the trip. The letter’s content made him cry. He called them tears of happiness and thankfulness.

“This is what I’ve worked for,” said Hall, who finished with a 127-9 career record. “I’ve left my mark and I’m proud of that.”

There were four other Long Island wrestlers in championship matches, but none won.

Centereach’s Craig Furrer became that school’s first state place-winner when he took second at 145. He dropped a 6-3 decision to Johnson City’s Matt Sorochinsky in the final.

Sachem’s Tim Godoy (138) missed a second-period headlock and Fowler’s Kareeb Howard capitalized for a two-point takedown and went on to a 7-3 win in the final.

Longwood‘s Kerry McCoy could manage only two escapes in a 3-2 loss to Mahopac’s John Degl in the 177 final.

Bethpage’s James Douglas (98) scored a first-period takedown but Ithaca’s Shane Mack scored 10 unanswered points for a 10-2 win in the final.

Matt Marciniak of Watkins Glen (155) set the state record for career wins with 189 when he beat Mike Quaglio of John Jay-East Fishkill, 4-2, in the final. Marciniak broke the mark of 188 set by J.J. Stanbro of Johnson City from 1984-89.
