FRIDAY NIGHT NASSAU STATE QUALIFYING MEET At SUNY-Farmingdale All running events in meters *State qualifier Boys

March 3, 1991 Longwood Winter Track

Longwood-CentereachNewsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 21 Apr 1991:

What’s this? After winning 136 consecutive spring track meets, 19 straight league titles and seven of the past 16 county championships, Centereach just might be preparing itself for a loss in a tough crossover meet against Longwood on May 6.

Though past history has shown that Centereach finds a way of rising to the occasion, no matter how tough the opponent may be, coach Bob Burkley sounds like he is bracing for the inevitable.

“Listen, we’re not as strong this year as we usually are for a number of reasons,” he said. “And I’m not the kind of coach who believes in the phrase `rebuilding year,’ so I won’t say that’s the stage we’re at. I will say, though, that Longwood is a very, very good team and we’re gonna have our work cut out for us.”

Burkley said last year was critical. In an austerity year, many sophomores and juniors just did not want to or could not afford to pay the $250 to participate. Still, Centereach won the title, thanks to some strong support from a base of seniors. This year, though, the void of experienced sophomores and juniors is evident. And Longwood, fresh from a state cross country championship, is ready for the challenge.

But perhaps the cruelest twist of all is that Longwood employs three assistant coaches – Doug Roenbeck, Joe Reilly and Mike Cohen – who all ran track for Burkley at Centereach back in the 1970s.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK Longwood’s Track Team Teems Distance star Hogan leads 19 qualifiers to championships: [EAST END Edition]

By A.J. Benza. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 03 Mar 1991

Back in September, everyone at Longwood figured Kevin Hogan would qualify for the state indoor track championships. And it’s no surprise that the senior will be competing in the 3,200-meter race on March 2 at Cornell.

But not too many people expected the school to qualify 19 athletes for the meet. Twelve girls and seven boys, including two alternates, were scheduled to trek upstate and attempt to bring home gold medals in three relays and eight individual events – and give Section XI a solid shot at placing in the top three, a level it has hit in each of the past five years.

According to girls coach Rick Colon, no other team in county history has ever achieved what Longwood has. Not only is its 19 qualifiers a county record, but no other school since 1977 has been crowned cross country and indoor track county champions in the same school year.

“We’ve come a long way,” Colon said.

The girls 4 x 200 relay team of Tracie and Diana George, Rosemary Gioia, Nydia Montoya and alternate Jennifer Simonton will be joined by the 4 x 800 team of Erin Dolan, Sue Dunbar, Kristin Bradley, Jennifer Delosso and alternate Stacey Cuozzo. Dolan (1,000), Tracie George (300), Jill Gross (shot put) and Cherise Dunbar (high jump) round out the field.

Boys coach Joe Reilly will count on the 4 x 200 team of Jeff Liggon, Dean Morelli, Ron Harding, Phil Koralski and alternate Frack Jackson, as well as Hogan (3,200) and Dan Mallon (1,000). Liggon (55 high hurdles) and Morelli (600) will also vie.

There is a possibility for the relay teams to slice some time from their marks at the Cornell facility. “We run on a tight track at Farmingdale – 11 laps to a mile,” Reilly said. “Cornell is longer with wider turns and longer straightaways. That could mean two seconds.”

And that could mean a state championship. High-water mark
