Losers: `Who’s That Girl?’: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

By A.J. Benza. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 02 June 1991:

Correction: Shoreham-Wading River’s girls track team finished second in last weekend’s county track and field championships. The scores reported in Newsday were incomplete. (6/4/91 140 NS SPORTS)

Stacey Rowe never heard of her. Tracie George wasn’t even sure what school she came from. Nicole Palma just shook her head in disbelief.

These were the reactions some of the county’s best sprinters displayed when they watched Sandy McFarland leave them in her dust to capture the 100-and 200-meter titles at yesterday’s Suffolk girls track and field championships at Bellport. McFarland was the pretty and soft-spoken unknown from East Hampton, who until yesterday, had never competed in a county final in either event. But in a two-hour span, she emerged as the star of the day, finishing the 100 in an unofficial meet-record 11.6 seconds and the 200 in a personal-best 24.8. She also became the first female county champion crowned at East Hampton. “I know,” she said. “Nobody ever heard of me. That’s what happens when you’re from way out in East Hampton. But you know, people do run out there.”

“When I saw that she recorded a 12.2 in the trials {yesterday}, I thought it was a typo or something,” said Rowe, who was second in the 100 at 11.9. “Because up until then I had never heard of her.”

Said George, “I’m gonna go find her and say, `Girl, who are you?'”

McFarland, however, was not the day’s only double winner. Shoreham-Wading River’s Krista Dunbar also was impressive in winning the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:03.1) and the 100 hurdles (14.6). “There was really nothing scientific to my approach,” said Dunbar, who chopped four seconds off her 400 time. “I just look for the last turn and concentrate on the final three hurdles.”

But while McFarland and Dunbar were turning in superior performances, Longwood steadily was amassing enough points to capture the team title for the second straight year. It was also believed to be the first time in county history that a team compiled a Triple Crown of sorts – capturing county titles in the cross-country, indoor and outdoor seasons.

George’s long jump of 17 feet, 11 3/4 inches, Jill Gross’ Long Island-best shot put of 39-feet, Kristin Bradley’s 5:02.7 in the 1,500 and the 3,200-and 400-relay teams all placed first to help Longwood earn 74 points. Bay Shore (42) and Whitman (40) placed second and third. {Correction: Shoreham-Wading River’s girls track team finished second in last weekend’s county track and field championships. “We’ve always had well-balanced teams,” said Longwood coach Chris Duffner. “We’ve got strong sprinters and field-event performers, good distance people and great relay teams.”

But perhaps no one was as balanced as Babylon’s Maranda Moleski, the pentathlon champion. Her 2,775 points were 175 more than needed to qualify for the state championships.

“She’s the easiest girl in the world to coach,” Babylon coach Joe Rossi said. “She’d learn to throw the discus overnight if she knew had to in order to win.”
