WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW: Girls Basketball Players to Watch: [SUFFOLK Edition 1]

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 06 Dec 1992

Alison Kuehne, Patchogue-Medford, Senior, Forward: At 5-10, Kuehne will fill the void at center left by the loss of All-Long Island player Karyn Thompson . . . A presence on the boards, Kuehne averaged 14 points and eight rebounds in earning All-County honors last season. Rebecca Yates, Patchogue-Medford, Senior, Guard: One of the best pure shooters in the county, Yates shot 60 percent from field last season when she was All-League . . . A dangerous three-point shooter who is the Raiders’ field general . . . Accurate passing, clutch free-throw shooting and excellent defense make her a threat from anywhere.

Alicia Conquest, Longwood, Junior, Center: Started as a freshman last season and averaged 11.5 points and 14 rebounds per game . . . At 5-11, she can dominate the boards and alters many shots.

Kim Canada, Brentwood, Senior, Guard: An exceptional ballhandler who creates her own shot . . . Was All-County last season after averaging 13 points per game . . . With young team last year, Canada was relied on for much of Brentwood’s scoring. This season, she should be able to show passing skills.

Kim Ruck, Northport, Junior, Guard: Will be asked to play more of a leadership role this year . . . Ruck is the prototypical Northport player – great shooter, excellent ballhandler, aggressive defender . . . Was All-County last season after averaging 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists . . . Was on the Empire State team that won a silver medal this summer.

Stephanie Rom, Northport, Junior, Guard: Three-year starter who is the catalyst behind a Northport offense that averaged 58.9 points a game . . . Averaged seven assists per game and 3.5 steals in earning All-County honors . . . Was a member of the Empire State team. Jennifer Jacks, Northport, Junior, Guard: Very quietly has become one of the top players in the county . . . Jacks averaged 11 points per game and 3 steals in earning All-League honors and earning a spot on the Empire State Team . . . “Jennifer at times is overlooked because of the success of her teammates,” said Northport coach Rich Castellano. “But in my heart she should have been All-County last season when she just missed.”

“Huntington put a big scare in us,” Northport coach Rick Castellano said, referring to the Lady Tigers’ narrow 36-27 semifinal victory Monday. “It was good to see Stephanie and Kim and everybody with their poise and confidence back. They looked like they were having fun.”

Northport will pretend it is facing the Lady Warriors for the first time. “That other game is gone,” Castellano said. “Saturday we have to start all over again.”
