HIGH SCHOOLS Centereach Streak Ends: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 09 May 1991

Longwood won all but three events as it ended Centereach’s dual-meet winning streak at 140 with a 99-51 victory in boys track yesterday.

“We were really pumped up to win,” Longwood coach Tony Toro said. “We felt we’ve had a good team over the years and that we didn’t get the respect we deserved. I’d say about 60 percent of our kids had personal bests.”

Jeff Liggon helped pave the way to victory with wins in the 100 (11.3 seconds) and the 200 (22.7). Dean Marelli won the 110 high hurdles in 14.6 seconds, the best time in Suffolk this season. Sophomore Mike Henderson won the 800 in 1:59.8.

Over the past 18 years, Longwood has amassed a 123-5 dual-meet record of its own.

Longwood Wins Title:

By John Valenti. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 02 June 1991

Last year, Copiague’s Richard Wagner learned a lesson about how not to qualify for the state track and field championships. He had qualified as a sophomore, when he finished third in the Suffolk boys championships in the 200-meter dash. That done, he figured he had it made again as a junior.

So, when it was Senior Cutout Day last year at Copiague, Wagner said, “I figured I was entitled.” Senior, or not, he cut classes that afternoon.

Problem was, it also was the day of the Suffolk championships. And Wagner? He and several teammates were disqualified from the meet by Copiague coach Tom Curry.

“I felt real bad about it, about what happened,” Wagner said. `I learned a big lesson about responsibility.”

Apparently. Wagner won the 100 and the 200 at the Suffolk championships yesterday at Bellport. He won the 100 in 10.5 seconds and the 200 in 21.6. Longwood, the heavy favorite, won its fifth team title in seven years with 111 points. Bayport-Blue Point was second (66), and Copiague was third (58).

Longwood, which won the state title in boys cross-country this season, swept both the boys and girls county titles this year in cross-country, as well as indoor and outdoor track and field. It is believed to be the first time in Long Island history that one school swept all six titles, meet officials said.

“That incident changed him {Wagner} a lot,” Curry said. “It ate him up, what happened. He was a totally different kid this year, working his tail off all the time. It was a good growing experience for him. In fact, he was in school before I was Friday.”

Wagner won the 100 with a strong, though late, surge to overcome a quick start by Hauppauge’s Antoine West, who was second in 10.7. Wagner then easily handled the field in the 200.

Shoreham-Wading River senior Pat MacElroy had a tougher time in the high jump. He won with a height of 6 feet, 9 inches, after he found himself in third place when he fouled on his first two attempts at 6-8. “He came over and said, “What am I doing wrong, coach?’ ” said Shoreham-Wading River coach Bob Szymanski, adding MacElroy had not lost this season in Suffolk. “I told him, `You’re coming in too slow and coming too close to the bar.’ “

MacElroy cleared 6-8 by several inches on his third attempt, and then watched as North Babylon’s Brian Broadway and Riverhead’s Joenell Johnson fouled out. Broadway finished second (6-8), and Johnson third (6-7).

Gambles paid off in other events, too. Longwood‘s Jeff Liggon, winner of the pentathlon each of the past two seasons, asked his coach, Tony Turo, if he could run the hurdles instead. Licgon won the 110 high hurdles in 14.0 – the fastest time in the state this season. He finished second in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 56.0. Teammate Dean Marelli was first in 55.6.

Longwood, overall, took four firsts, three seconds and three thirds. Dan Mallon won the 1,600 (4:22.0), anchored the first-place 4 x 800 relay team (8:09.5) and finished second in the steeplechase (9:54.4).

June 15, Longwood Boys Track – Dean Marelli

SCHOLASTIC SPOTLIGHT Hurdler Makes Big Strides: [EAST END Edition]

By Joe Krupinski. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 09 June 1991

According to his father, Dean Marelli of Longwood proved he was a genuine hurdler in his first race as a freshman. “Midway through, he tripped and fell over a hurdle,” Riverhead junior high football coach Blair Marelli said about his son’s debut. “But, without hesitation, he picked himself up, finished the race and almost beat the kid he was running against.”

Longwood coach Tony Toro noticed Marelli’s resolve right there, too. Leaving his other duties at the dual meet for the moment, the coach took the time to walk his novice hurdler the length of the track, back to where his warmup suit was waiting. Whatever was said between coach and athlete that day had a lasting impression.

Four years later, Marelli has become the best 400-meter high school hurdler in the state and one of the top five in the nation, according to assistant coach Doug Roenbeck, himself a former hurdler at Centereach and Austin Peay College in Texas.

The 6-1, 150-pound senior was expected to win his specialty at yesterday’s state meet in Kingston and better his time of 53.8, which was the best in the state this season. If conditions were right and that old No. 8 hurdle (every hurdler’s nightmare) doesn’t cause a problem, then Marelli might earn the college scholarship he deserves.

“Truthfully, I think he could go a full second faster {52.8} if he does it right,” Roenbeck said at last week’s county championships, where Marelli won his event in a lackluster 55.6, a few strides ahead of teammate Jeff Liggon.

Later in the day, Liggon won the 110 hurdles in 14 seconds flat and Marelli finished third.

Before Marelli had his first taste of hurdling competition and took his memorable flop, he almost walked away from the event altogether.

His brother, Blair Jr., was on his way to becoming the 1989 county champion in the 400 hurdles and Dean had to decide whether trying to follow in his brother footsteps would be a positive or negative experience.

“He shied away at first because of Blair,” Roenbeck recalled. “Like any younger brother, he wanted to be like his older brother. But he was unsure if he could live up to the expectations.”

By his sophomore year, when Blair won the county title, Dean was saying, “Whatever time he runs, I’ll beat it someday.”

The friendly sibling rivalry came to a head at the Penn Relays this season. Dean ran a 24.4 in a high school heat. Blair, who runs for Southern Connecticut and finished sixth in the NCAA Division II championships two weeks ago, did a 24.2 in his college heat.

“The first thing that Blair said as he came off the track was, `Did I beat his time?’ ” their father said with a chuckle.
