HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK He’s Got His Coach Jumping for Joy: [EAST END Edition]
By A.J. Benza. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 18 Feb 1990:
On his days off, in between shifts and on weekends, Mike Santarpia – the ex-teacher turned Suffolk County cop – trains Longwood track and field athletes in the shot put and discus events. Last week, his efforts paid off for Vin Stewart, the school’s 6-5, 285-pound shot-putter. The senior’s put of 61 feet 1 1/2 inches gave him a commanding first-place finish in the League I Championships and it was also considered as the best on the eastern seaboard. And according to a statitician at Track and Field News, the throw is being recognized as the fourth-best in the nation this year.
“I just called out of curiosity to see where the throw stood,” said Santarpia, who has coached Stewart since the senior transferred from the Bronx in his freshman year. Recently, Stewart – who is ranked first in the state – also placed first in the Demarest Invitational – a tournament that pits the country’s top 20 shot putters. Last Wednesday he was to sign a letter of intent to play football for Penn State.
Santarpia has also done wonders for discus thrower Mike Ventura. “Vinny is just coming into his own, but Mike’s been a horse for three years now,” he said of the Longwood senior who is also ranked third in Suffolk in the shot. Ventura was a county champ as a sophomore and junior in the discus, as well as placing second in the state last year with a toss of 177-6. This year, Santarpia has his eye on Ventura breaking the state record of 195-5. “He can do it. He’s Long Island’s best,” he said. “Usually, the nation just doesn’t take our throwers seriously. These two ought to change that.” Brothers Carry P-M Wrestlers

STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK / EAST END Scott Burian Longwood Junior Track: [EAST END Edition]
Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 18 Mar 1990
Scott Burian is a good reason why Longwood’s winter track team captured the League I, Conference I and county titles this past season. The junior regularly placed highly in the 1,000-meter run (second at the county meet) and also helped the team’s 4 x 800 relay team earn a county championship as its anchor runner, turning in the fastest split (2:00.07) at the county meet. Coach Tony Toro points out that Burian received the baton facing a 30-yard deficit at the conference meet, but pulled away to give his team a 30-yard win.
“He’s become a county caliber runner in his junior year,” said assistant coach Doug Roenbeck. “He fueled us a lot this season.”
Burian is holding a 90 average in his honors classes and is a member of the National Honor Society despite the demands of three sports (cross country, winter track and spring track).
