1988 – 1989

Suffolk Wrestling Preview

By Gregg Sarra. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 04 Dec 1988:

The Suffolk wrestling contingent has every right to be optimistic about its chances for a second consecutive state title and fourth in the past five years. As the 1988-89 wrestling season gets under way, Suffolk will make a strong bid for the title behind two returning state champions and six experienced qualifiers.

Nassau, with only one returning state qualifier, will look to rebound after a season in which it lost the grip on its 1987 state title and fell to its worst-ever finish.

After Suffolk had captured state titles in ’86 and ’87, Nassau – with an exceptional senior class – reclaimed the state title in ’88. But the returning class fared poorly in ’88 and the outlook in Nassau doesn’t get much brighter.

“The dominant trend in the sport has shifted out of Nassau and into Suffolk,” said Massapequa coach Gary Mims. “Ten, fifteeen years ago, Nassau was what Suffolk is now. A big suburban area that dominated wrestling. And now as the city continues moving east, the programs keep building out there.”

Another major factor affecting Nassau programs has been the loss of freshman feeder programs. “We have the only freshman team,” Mims said. “Other schools are bringing kids up to the varsity because of low turnouts.”

Long Beach has avoided descent and remains one of Long Island’s best teams. “We’ve been fortunate,” said Long Beach coach Paul Gillespie. “The kids have stayed interested and our program is strong.”

County champion Rob Drake (155) leads a Long Beach team that has 11 of its 12 starters back in quest of its third consecutive county title. “I believe our program’s discipline works,” Gillespie said. “We have strict eligibility rules and the kids work hard to stay on the team.”

The source of Gillespie’s influence on his wrestlers would be in his ability to relate his experiences to them during the summer months at the beach. “As a lifeguard for the Long Beach Patrol, I see them all the time and that helps,” Gillespie said. “A lot of my kids work with me. We’re very close.”

That closeness has enabled Long Beach to capture eight titles in 10 years, including five county tournament wins and three dual-meet titles. In the past two seasons, Gillespie has guided them to the county tournament and the dual-meet championship.

Massapequa, which lost to Long Beach in the dual-meet championship final, has been decimated by graduation and returns only a few starters. Baldwin and MacArthur are talented and coaches believe they can contend. MacArthur returns Tom Bobal, the favorite at 132 pounds, and Baldwin looks to veterans Mike Trepeta and Stu Katzen for leadership.

The dual-meet schedule features many interesting matchups, including a Jan. 14 date that pits Long Beach at Suffolk powerhouse Sachem. “With everybody healthy it’ll be some match,” Gillespie said.

Sachem coach Jack Mahoney is one of the Suffolk coaches whose optimism for a banner season is supported by the growth of KID wrestling programs and the success his Empire State Games team had this summer.

Expect four League I teams to vie for the Suffolk title. Longwood, Sachem, Patchogue-Medford and Floyd all field experienced squads with depth.

Shoreham-Wading River, the defending county champion, is young and will be hard-pressed to contend for the title. “When I broke in at Shoreham seven years ago, the kids used to ask, `Do we have to go to the county tournament?’,” coach Rocky Davey said. “It’s not realistic that we’ll win. But we’re confident we can get back to the top. Now the kids look forward to the counties.”

Sachem Makes Up for Early Losses: [SUFFOLK Edition]

By Gregg Sarra. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 04 Feb 1989:

When Sachem’s wrestlers jogged onto the mat before last night’s first-place showdown with Longwood, the hometown crowd erupted. The foot stomping and bleacher banging didn’t cease during the entire three-minute warmup. It would be that way all night.

Bolstered by the standing room only crowd, Sachem avenged its only loss of last year, a 20-19 heart-breaker to Longwood, with a convincing 27-19 victory.

“They wrestled really well,” said Longwood coach Mike Picozzi. “Our lightweights were super but we didn’t get it done in the middle. A couple of draws and a terrible call cost us.”

Longwood took away Sachem’s strength in the lower weights when Chris Conway erased a 4-0 deficit by reversing Joe Lopez onto his back for a near fall with 1:13 left in the third period for a 5-4 win.

To further dampen Sachem’s hopes, defending county champion Donald Ross (112) dropped a 6-5 decision to Steve Ketcham.

Unfortunately, as the match heated up, so did the standing-room-only crowd. Spectators were kept out in the hall and the doors were closed to the overflow crowd. In a show of poor taste and unsportsmanlike conduct, fans from both schools chanted obscenities and the Longwood fans taunted 132-pounder Rudy Godoy, whose family moved from the Longwood district into Sachem’s district before the school year.

Godoy recorded the most controversial win of the evening when he reversed Duval Coleman at the buzzer and was credited with a 2-1 victory.

“I was concentrating on coach Mahoney and I didn’t know if I had won until the referee awarded me the win,” Godoy said. “After my hand was raised I was happy, but my real friends in Longwood would never [taunt! me. I wish those people were in my shoes and knew what it felt like to move in your senior year. I respect people and I would never do that.”

Picozzi, who argued vehemently against the reversal call, said the decision changed the complexion of the match. “The call upset my kids and changed the mood of the team. It really brought us down. We were a different team from there on in.”

Rudy’s brother Timmy wrestled D.J. Simonton at 138 and fought to a 4-4 draw. “He felt he gave up two points,” Mahoney said. “Timmy doesn’t make mistakes and he didn’t force anything.”

Sachem (11-0) won only five bouts and drew two. Pat Fish (119) recorded a 17-0 technical fall over Bill Kramer and 145-pounder Tim Markart flattened Ismail Rasheed at 5:35 for a pin and a 22-11 lead.

“Our lower weights fell and we had to pick them up,” Markart said. “We had to pull through and we did.”

“I always tell them no one guy is going to win or lose a dual for us,” Mahoney said. “It’s a team thing.”

WRESTLING NOTEBOOK Tough Times for Timekeepers: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

By Gregg Sarra. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 20 Feb 1989:

For the second time this season, a controversial decision by a timekeeper tainted the outcome of a match. But this time, it was the dual meet for the Suffolk League I title. And host Sachem, benefiting from the decision, came away with a 27-19 victory over Longwood on Feb. 3.
The call came at the end of the 132-pound match between Sachem’s Rudy Godoy and Longwood’s Duval Coleman. As Longwood’s fans counted the time down, Godoy was awarded a two-point reversal at the buzzer that gave him a 2-1 victory and Sachem a 14-9 lead. But spectators and other referees watching the match from a neutral set of bleachers contend that time ran out before the reversal.
The official scorer and timer both were Sachem junior high school wrestling coaches paid to work at the matches, and lack of communication between the timer and referee resulted in the problem.
“The timer’s job is not only to keep time,” said Frank Barbuto, the president of the Suffolk County Wrestling Officials Association. “In a loud gym, he’s supposed to count down the final 10 seconds at the referee’s side and tap him with a towel when time expires. This was not done.”
The timer, apparently unable to get in proper position as the wrestlers scrambled on the mat, stood about eight feet from first-year varsity referee Tom Hake. After realizing he could not get Hake’s attention, he threw the towel in Hake’s direction as time expired.
As many fans in the capacity crowd booed, Hake conferred with the scorer and timer and was told the move was in time. “He did the right thing,” Barbuto said of Hake. “He checked with the table because he couldn’t hear the buzzer while he was watching the move. He asked for help and their decision was that time hadn’t run out.”
Amid all the confusion, both wrestlers stood puzzled on the mat awaiting a decision. “Neither one of us knew who the winner was,” said Godoy, who wrestled for Longwood last year before moving into the Sachem school district. “It wasn’t until they raised my hand that I knew I had won.”
When Godoy’s hand was raised, it was such a shock to Coleman that he broke down in tears in disbelief. The call sent Longwood coach Mike Picozzi into a frenzy. “That’s twice we’ve been burned at Sachem,” said Picozzi, who recalled a similar situation in last year’s dual at Sachem. “Something has to be done about the scorer’s table.”
But Barbuto said schools have never asked to have officials assigned to scorer’s tables. “If they could work the table and be compensated, we’d do it,” he said. “It would eliminate any question in judgment.”
After one earlier incident, Bay Shore junior high school wrestling coach John Pfeffer was dismissed. Pfeffer was the timer in a 24-23 Newfield victory at Bay Shore in which the host team failed to gain a pin at the final buzzer because Pfeffer declared time had run out.
In any case, it’s a problem that will continue to plague wrestling at significant meets in which the crowds are boisterous and the scorers are not real officials. Overcoming adversity

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 26 Feb 1989:

In the battle for the team championship, second-place Longwood had 70 points and advanced seven of its nine qualifiers to the semifinals. Sachem led with 77 1/2 points, with five semifinalists and three in the wrestlebacks.

“Ninth [last year! was our best finish ever,” Longwood coach Mike Picozzi said. “We wrestled really well and only one of our semifinalists is a senior.” SUFFOLK CHAMPIONSHIPS Semifinal Pairings At Ward Melville
