Krause, Longwood Run Second at Eastern States: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

By J.P. Pelzman.

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 16 Oct 1988:

Kevin Krause didn’t expect to win the Eastern States boys crosscountry race at Van Cortlandt Park yesterday. And he didn’t,finishing second. But the Longwoodsenior wasn’t upset. Like a student in an introductory class, he realizes that there are tougher, more important courses ahead in this fall semester.

“Last year I peaked at this time,” said Krause, who finished in 12 minutes, 40 seconds. “Then I barely won the state meet and I didn’t do well in the Kinney regionals. I want to peak later on this year.”

Krause’s runnerup performance was matched in the team standings by Longwood, which lost to Pope Paul VI (Haddonfield, N.J.), 45-112. Longwood had three runners in the top 20. They were: Keith Gorski (4th, 13:03); Mark Cruz (6th, 13:10) and Paul Childs (16th, 13:29). The race was the featured event of the Fordham University Meet.

“We’re pretty happy,” said Floyd coach Frank LaBianca. “This is the first race we really cranked up for so far this season.”

Krause, meanwhile, is just about to crank it up. “We haven’t done any speed work yet,” said Longwood coach Tony Toro. “We’re starting speed work next week. We’re keying on the Kinney meet and the state meet.”

St. Anthony’s finished fifth with 157 points despite having one of its runners drop out midway through the race with a sprained ankle. The race was won by Jason DiJoseph of Pope Paul VI, who ran a 12:25. It was DiJoseph’s second straight win in this particular race. Cross Country Champs Keep Crowns East Islip’s Norton, Longwood’s Krause are fastest in county: [SUFFOLK Edition]

By Michael Silver. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 05 Nov 1988:

As Jen Norton crossed the finish line of Sunken Meadow’s five-kilometer cross country course yesterday, her resolute gait became an irrepressible limp. Having been held out of competition for three weeks because of her sore left shin, the East Islip sophomore had just proven she is faster on one good leg than the rest of the county’s high school girls are on two.

As Norton, who won the county Class A championship in 19:40 – 20 seconds off her winning time last year, and 35 seconds slower than her career best on this course – defended her title while running in pain, Longwood‘s Kevin Krause simply ran away from the field. Krause, alone in the lead after the first mile, became the first boy to win three county titles, taking his second straight Class A title in a lifetime best 15:46.6.

Krause’s finish, which beat his previous personal record on the Sunken Meadow course by 10 seconds, propelled Longwood past favored William Floyd, 84 to 108, and gave the Lions their second county title in three years. Floyd won the girls’ Class A title, beating Centereach by eight points.

Krause, last year’s state champion, is a good bet to defend his title next Saturday in Lake Placid. Norton, despite her performance yesterday, is hoping she’ll be healthy enough to make the trip.

“They think it’s shin splints,” Norton said of her injury, which she admitted has bothered her all season. “It didn’t hurt as much today, but after {the layoff}, the stamina wasn’t there.”

Whenever an injury of this nature lingers, so does the fear of finding a stress fracture. East Islip coach Barry Goodman, however, seemed bothered by such a suggestion. “I wouldn’t put her out there if it was serious,” Goodman said. “She’s been tested for various injuries, and it’s been diagnosed at this time as shin splints. She had an OK to run from doctors and her therapist.

“I’m very proud of her performance,” he added. “I’m proud she was able to come back and finish the race, let alone win it.”

Goodman said Norton hoped to compete in the trials of the Kinney Nationals meet on Nov. 26 at Van Cortlandt Park, “if she survives the state meet.”

Norton’s hobbled performance is not without precedent. Last year, she missed a month and a half with an ankle injury but came back to win the county title. Krause, who won in 1985 as a freshman, struggled to a ninth-place finish the following year while suffering from a similar injury. He finished 32nd in the state meet – 20 places below his freshman placing – but helped Longwood win the state Federation title.

“When I was hurt the team needed me,” Krause said. “I would’ve liked to sit out, but without me, we wouldn’t have won. That’s not the case with her {East Islip finished 12th yesterday}. But she must not be in that bad shape, because she won.”

Longwood’s Krause Falters Upstate: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

By Thomas Hill. Newsday Special Correspondent. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 13 Nov 1988

Longwood‘s Kevin Krause was staring his second straight Class A state Cross Country Championship in the face yesterday. But he didn’t recognize it.

Krause, who won the 1987 title at New York Tech, led the pack through the 5,000-meter former Olympic biathlon course from the halfway point until less than 500 meters remained. Then he allowed both Pittsford’s John Horkheimer and Webster’s Tom Smith to pass him before the finish line. Krause didn’t run out of gas; he knew just what he was doing, or so he thought.

“I was thinking there was another half-mile to go,” Krause said. “I didn’t think {Horkheimer} was making his final kick. I thought he was just making a move on me. I never kicked.”

By the time Krause made the final turn and saw the finish line less than 300 yards away, it was much too late. Horkeimer won in 16:03.1, Smith finished second in 16:03.5 and Krause was third in 16:11.0.

The boys team from William Floyd finished second in the Class A team competition. Saratoga edged Floyd, 74-84. Paul Childs finished first for Floyd and eighth overall in 16:41.6. Floyd’s Keith Gorski finished 11th overall in 16:46. Farmingdale’s Vin Markovina was 10th in 16:43.1.
