HIGH SCHOOLS/WRESTLING PREVIEWS / Jantzen, Messina Top Talented Group:

By Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 23 Dec 1998:

LEAGUE I: Floyd is the newcomer to the upper echelon in Suffolk wrestling. The Colonials are the team to beat because they have senior Joel Barone (215) and an experienced lineup. With Toro and a host of experience back, including Starlin Jiminez (119) and Moses Gonzalez (145), Brentwood is looking to earn the league crown. Longwood and Sachem will be strong again and Connetquot, with county runner-up Joe Patrovich (160), is highly touted.

Son’s Title Follows Surgery:

Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 03 Jan 1999

Judi Carlon sat in the second row of bleachers at Bay Shore High School yesterday at the Cliff Clark Classic wrestling tournament but her mind was elsewhere. Her husband of 27 years, Albert, had emergency surgery for an infected gall bladder at Mid-Island Hospital in Bethpage earlier in the day.

“I’m thinking about how he’s feeling but we didn’t want our son {Dan Carlon} to worry,” Judi Carlon said. “We couldn’t tell him his father was undergoing surgery before the tournament. It would have been too much.”

Carlon, the defending Nassau County champion at 125 pounds from Division, worked his way through the 145-pound bracket with a win by technical fall and two pins.A fall in 3:31 over James Tully of Longwood gave him the title.

“I left the hospital after I saw that my sweetheart was fine,” Judi said.

And she went to see her baby wrestle.

Dan Carlon, the only son of Albert and Judi, came off the mat and after a cooling-off period, was told of his father’s surgery.

“We’re going to see him now,” said Carlon, who seemed annoyed of the news, but pleased with the upbeat report.

“I knew he’d be mad that we didn’t tell him,” Judi said. “Now we can go tell my husband the good news.”

The highlight bout of the tournament came at 160 pounds. Two-time Nassau County champion Bill Bennett of Division met Freeport’s Eddie Gomez, a county runner-up a year ago, in the final. Bennett took a 1-0 lead with a third-period escape before Gomez countered with a beautiful takedown with 29 seconds left for a 2-1 win.

“He has a difficult stance to penetrate and counters well,” Gomez said. “We’ve had some great matches. There aren’t too many chances to get a takedown against him.”

Freeport coach Russ Cellan said: “It doesn’t get any better than that. Bennett was so strong and Eddie caught him a little off balance for the takedown.”

The tournament was loaded with defending CHSAA state champions, Nassau and Suffolk county champs and a few county runners-up. Defending CHSAA state champion Evan Howard of St. Anthony’s brawled his way to the 152-pound title with a 10-7 win over Matt Smith of Bellmore JFK.

“We saw some incredible wrestling from some of the best teams on Long Island,” Bay Shore coach Mike Porcelli said. “Cliff Clark would have loved the competitive atmosphere.”

Clark, a coach at Bay Shore from 1940-64, won eight county championships and had 95 Suffolk finalists, including 55 Suffolk champions, both county records.

Longwood’s Adam Czachor prevailed in the 130-pound final, using two near falls in the first period to open a 10-2 lead before Bay Shore’s Dan Najera cut the deficit to 12-8 midway through the third. Czachor capitalized during a flurry and headlocked Najera for the pin in 5:54. It was the second straight title for the Lions. Joey Ketcham shut out Patchogue-Medford’s Jerard Melito, 13-0, in the 125-pound final.

Notes & Quotes: Suffolk high school sports historian Andrew Slawson was honored before the final round as the first recipient of the Cliff Clark Award. Slawson, who was recognized by the National Football Foundation for his volunteer work in the amateur football community, was presented a plaque at center mat . . . Bay Shore wrestler Jason Bujold sprained his neck in the 140-pound match for third place after landing head-first in the second period.

Longwood Downs Sachem:

BY Greg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 08 Jan 1999

The dual meet. Longwood-Sachem. The year really doesn’t matter. There always is quality wrestling, with bouts battled to the final seconds withschool pride in mind.

Last night was no different. The rivalry started in typical fashion as Longwood‘s Matt Sganga battled Frank Sokolowski into overtime tied at 6 in their 103-pound match. Sganga gained a takedown at 42 seconds of overtime for the decision as Longwood won six of the first eight bouts to take a commanding 26-12 lead en route to a 38-19 victory over Sachem in last night’s League I opener for both teams before 500 at Sachem. It was Longwood‘s third win in its last four duals against Sachem.

“Matt had nothing to lose because he’s only our 96-pounder,” Longwood coach Scott Conlon said. “I told him just go out and go hard.”

With the team score tied at 6, Longwood‘s Joey Ketcham (125) and Adam Czachor (130) turned in impressive victories to open a 17-6 lead. Ketcham won a superior decision over Steve Buonopane, 13-1, and Czachor beat Pete Galetta by technical fall in 5:03.

The most exciting bout came at 135 pounds. Sachem’s Mike LeTang was bumped up two weight classes to face Jamie Fabian and the two grappled a tight match. Fabian was about to gain a takedown in overtime when LeTang turned a compromising position into a favorable one witha whiplike move. Fabian fell beneath LeTang, who changed his grip to a headlock. LeTang applied the tightest of headlocks and inched Fabian’s shoulders to the mat – before referee Dave Darrow smacked the mat for a stunning pin 51 seconds into overtime to get Sachem within 16-12.

LeTang had stolen victory from defeat in one sweet move. The ending punctuated a brilliant bout that showcased the skills of both wrestlers. Fabian countered and moved aggressively as did LeTang. All Fabian could do when it was over was bury his face in Conlon’s chest and believe his coach’s words.

“I told him I was very proud of him,” Conlon said. “I thought he wrestled a great match. He shouldn’t hang his head.”

That victory could have swayed the momentum Sachem’s way and set the tone for the final seven bouts. Instead, Longwood reeled off five more wins. The Lions’ Chris Lake methodically broke down Jason Kling and cruised to a 13-2 win at 140 pounds and Jim Tully used an unconventional move to pin Sachem’s Dan Toia in 1:47 at 145 pounds for a 26-12 lead. Trailing 2-1, Tully reversed Toia to his back and just clamped Toia’s arms motionless above his shoulders and leaned back on him for the pin.

“Anything can happen in this rivalry,” Conlon said.

Dan Sable beat Sachem’s Matt Sykes in the 189-pound bout, 12-7, to clinch the victory.

“Another wild dual,” Sable said. “Always is.”

William Floyd 33, Longwood 27
January 22, 1999
Close Call for Longwood. Longwood coach Scott Conlon knew it would
be a close wrestling match against Floyd.
It was, and then some. Joel Barone’s pin at heavyweight proved to be
the difference as Floyd defeated Longwood, 33-27, in a Suffolk I
contest.
“[Floyd] coach [Terry] Phelan has a tough team,” Conlon said. “There
was some great wrestling out there.”
With his team down 27-21, Longwood’s Dan Sable pinned Joe Randazzo
in 4:10 in a bout featuring two of the top 189-pounders in the county to
tie the score at 27 heading into the heavyweight bout.
Longwood’s Adam Czachor defeated John Cicio 9-6 at 130 in another
close match.

Patrovich Family Pins Down 2 Titles:

Gregg Sarra. STAFF WRITER. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 22 Feb 1999

The moment was beautiful. It was father and sons in a unique bond of friendship and love. Mike and Joe Patrovich Jr. hugged their father, Joe Sr., at matside after Joe Jr. won his second county title.

Joe Patrovich, a senior at Connetquot, pounded Jerome Joe of Hills East by technical fall in 2:57 of the 160-pound final late Saturday night at the Dr. Robert Fallot Suffolk County wrestling championships at the University at Stony Brook.

The win improved Joe to 31-0 and put him in select company with his younger brother Mike, a sophomore at Islip, who turned in an exciting 9-8 upset win over defending county champion Mike Ingenito of North Babylon for the 119-pound title. Mike Patrovich earned the ultimate respect from his peers when he was voted the tournament’s Champion of Champions.

The two titles made it an unforgettable tournament for the Patrovich family. For the first time in tournament history, brothers from different schools won titles in the same year.

“Oh, this is so special,” said Joe Sr., the coach at Islip, who won a county title for Farmingdale in 1973. “I really had to just step back and seize the moment. It was almost surreal. All I kept thinking about was how fortunate I am and how lucky I was to experience this. What a great night to be a father.”

Joe Sr. has coached Mike for the past three years at Islip but has had to watch from the stands during Joe Jr.’s matches at Connetquot.

“We sold our house in Bohemia when Mike was headed into the eighth grade and we enrolled him in Islip to get him started over there because we’d bought a new house,” Joe Sr. said. “Then both deals fell through. We had Joey start the 10th grade at Connetquot because he was happy there and things were going well. We didn’t want to pull him out of school and away from his friends until we were in the new house.”

The move never happened, and Joe Sr. has been paying tuition for Mike to go to school in Islip.

“I always wanted to wrestle and play football for my father,” said Mike, who is 32-1. “I ride into school every day with my dad and we have a really close bond. I love being with him – it’s great.”

Joe Sr. said he was worried about Joe Jr. after Mike won his bout. “He {Joe Jr.} was so pumped and happy for his brother that I was worried that he didn’t have enough time to regroup his emotions,” he said.

Notes & Quotes: Hauppauge scored 160 points to capture the team title for the first time in school history. Two-time county winner Mike Messina (130) led four Eagles into the finals. Messina upended Floyd’s John Cicio, 9-4 . . . Shoreham-Wading River’s Jesse Jantzen, a two-time defending state champion, won his 172nd career match and 114th in a row with a technical fall over Harborfields Steve Mally in 2:19 at 145 pounds. Jantzen, a junior, won a Long Island-record fifth county title . . . The third time was a charm for Rocky Point’s Mike Torriero, who outpointed Sayville’s Mike Cox, 10-5, for the 140-pound crown . . . And how about Comsewogue’s Glenn Burns, who shook off a 5-0 deficit and pinned Glenn’s Ed Williams in 2:32 for the 275-pound title . . . Shoreham-Wading River freshman Dan Miracola won the 103-pound title after Dr. Frank Segreto tended to a severe cut over Miracola’s eye that required six stitches. The little tough guy edged North Babylon’s Greg McCoy, 3-1.
