Krause Champ In 3,200 Meters: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

By J.P Pelzman. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 12 Mar 1989

Kevin Krause of Longwood wasn’t shooting for any particular time in the 3,200 meters. He just wanted a state title. And that’s what he got as he became one of three Long Island boys to secure individual crowns at the state indoor track championships at Cornell University yesterday.

The PSAL won the overall team title with 107 points while Suffolk (Section XI) was second with 66 and the Catholic High School Athletic Association was third. Nassau (Section VIII) was seventh.

Edmund Jones of Amityville won the high jump with an effort of 6 feet, 8 inches, while Tom Schmitt of St. Anthony’s captured the pole vault at 15 feet. Schmitt was allowed three chances to set a state record of 15-5, but was unable to. “I thought I had it on two of my jumps,” said Schmitt, who was shooting for the indoor state mark of 15-4 3/4 established by Tom Yelverton of Susquehanna Valley in 1980.

For Krause, setting a state record was the least of his concerns. “It was a slow pace,” Krause said. So slow, in fact, that Krause’s winning time of 9 minutes, 30.2 seconds was five seconds slower than the time posted by last year’s winner. It was also slow enough to allow Keith Gorski of Floyd, who won the unseeded heat, to finish second overall in a time of 9:34.1 “My goal was just to win,” Krause said. “I didn’t care about the time.

“I was just sitting until I wanted to make a move,” he said. “The race went exactly the way I hoped.” Krause added that he was pacing himself because he plans to run in a national meet at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., today.

Schmitt’s winning vault is a personal-best effort, bettering his previous best of 14-6. “I was up there at the top. There were about six of us that were right there,” he said. “I knew there were a lot of good ones. It’s been a good year for pole vaulting.”

Justin Carro of Longwood was second with a 14-6. Carro won the event in 1988 with a vault of 14-0.

Jones’ winning high jump edged out Leon Venton of Governeur, who posted a 6-7. Schmitt finished sixth in this event with a 6-6. Jones’ effort bettered the 6-6 he managed during the Suffolk County meet.

Brad Sumner of McQuaid (Rochester) set a national indoor record with his time of 1:19.3 in the 600. It was also a state and meet record. In each case, it broke the record of 1:20.3 set at this meet in 1988 by Ian Jones of Brooklyn Nazareth. (All running events in meters) Winners and top area finishers BOYS
