The Classiest of ’87 Set to Step Out: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 20 Sep 1987

BOYS CROSS – COUNTRY There is no hesitation on Tony Toro’s part when he identifiesLongwood junior Kevin Krause as Suffolk’s premier runner. “He is thebest,” the Longwood coach states matterof-factly. “And he’ll prove it this year unless they find someone who runs with four legs.”

Krause is the guy who came out of nowhere to capture the 1985 county Class A championship in 16 minutes, 24.7 seconds – a Sunken Meadow course record for freshmen. He missed most of last season with a foot injury suffered in midSeptember, but Toro reports Krause is fully recovered and expects him to challenge the top runners in the state.

“The only thing that could hold him back is another injury,” said Toro. “But honestly, if he’s healthy, nobody will come close.”

Of the many runners who will challenge Krause, Miller Place’s Rob Caskey appears to be his closest rival. Caskey placed fourth in last year’s county Class B meet in 16:40.1 and 12th in the state in 16:47.4. Others to watch are Sayville’s John Fitzpatrick, Port Jefferson’s Steve Breit, Rocky Point’s Kevin Youngs, Bayport’s Eddie Walters and Floyd juniors Jimmy Cruz and Keith Gorski.

A Good Chance For a Preview: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

By Dave Shaw. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 18 Oct 1987:

A couple of Long Islanders with established reputations stole the show and solidified their standing among the state’s best. Longwood junior Kevin Krause and Babylon senior Christine Gentile won their respective races by more than 45 seconds.

“We came to run the course rather than go into the state meet blind,” Krause said after winning the boys A race in 16:04.6, his fourth consecutive major-meet victory after finishing second in the season-opening Suffern Invitational. “Now we’ll train here twice a week until the states. It’s actually a pretty fast course. I think you’ll see winning times around 15:30 or 15:40 {in the state meet}. If I’m going to win, I’ll have to do it early in the race because I’m not very good at kicking.”

Krause was injured most of last year, when Longwood finished second by a point to Sweet Home-Buffalo in the state Class A race. Longwood rebounded to win the Federation title by two points. “Sometimes it kills me,” Krause said. “If I had done this well last year, our team would have been untouchable.”

Gentile, a two-time state Class B champion, captured the girls A race in 18:46.94, more than 10 seconds better than her winning time in last year’s classified race. “And the course is longer this year,” she said. “So I’m that much better.”

The win was Gentile’s third straight after placing third in the high school girls division in the Fifth Avenue Mile Sept. 26. She called the course “enjoyable,” complete with straightaways, a series of rolling hills and steep inclines and declines. “I wanted to get the feel of the course again,” she said, “to determine where the tough spots are and where I can gather myself. I didn’t mind running alone because it allowed me to concentrate and make mental notes. When it comes time for the state meet, I’ll be prepared.” Boys A

Runners Are Tops in State Krause, Gentile, Miller Place team run away with titles: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]

By Thomas C. Peele. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 15 Nov 1987

Written in large black block letters on the heels of the racing flats that Longwood‘s Kevin Krause wore in yesterday’s state championship meet at New York Tech are the words, “It ain’t over yet.”

Yet a quarter-mile into the 5,000meter Class A race, Krause, the prerace favorite, thought his day was indeed over. “I was back in the pack, boxed in with the guys who’d be happy finishing fiftieth,” Krause said. “I wanted to win and was scared; I began to panic a little. The guy in front of me slipped, so I grabbed his shoulder and pushed past him. Then I slipped and grabbed another guy. People were cursing and yelling, grabbing and pushing. There was no other way to get ahead.”

Krause’s aggressive tactics worked, and by the first-mile mark he had a lead that he estimated to be five or 10 seconds. “Then I came out of a turn, hit a patch of mud, and went down again,” he said. “Luckily I was able to pop right back up like a baseball player sliding into a base.” He was also able to mantain his lead and won in 16 minutes, 14.4 seconds, a time that was nine seconds off the course record which he set earlier this year. The record later was shattered by Rich Bolt, the Class C champion from Harley Allendale Columbia, by 16 seconds.

“I was dead the whole race. I never really felt good, but it was put-up-orshut-up time.” Krause “put up” and finished eight seconds ahead of Dieter Drake of Guilderland.

In the girl’s Class B race, Christine Gentile of Babylon, the defending champion, cruised to a 40-second victory with a time of 18:43.8, breaking her own course record in the process. That record also was broken later in the day when Class A champion Deresa Walters of Penfield raced to the finish in 18:31.1.

“It’s tough to push yourself when you run alone,” Gentile said, “but this is a challenging course and I wanted to do well going into the National Regionals.”

Gentile and Krause will compete in the Northeast National Regional meet at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Nov. 28. “Christine will be pushed in that race by several outstanding runners,” said her coach, Marshall Aykroyd.

Miller Place, paced by Bob Caskey’s fifth-place finish, won the Class B team championship. “To win a state team championship you have to have five outstanding runners. One weak kid will bury you in team competition,” coach Fred Conway said. “We came in knowing we were one of four teams that could win this thing, and all our kids came through.” Miller Place will compete as a team in next Saturday’s state Federation meet at Van Cortlandt Park.
