Longwood’s Stunning Reversal Ends Sachem’s winning streak at 36 in winning League I title: [SUFFOLK Edition]

By Gregg Sarra. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 13 Feb 1988:

Long before Sachem would host Longwood for the League Iwrestling title last night, Longwood coach Mike Picozzi was mapping out his strategy for beating the defending county champions. “I took every kid and explained what his job was,” said Picozzi, who never had beaten Sachem in six years at Longwood. “I stressed that if we all contributed and we didn’t let the pressure affect us, we could pull it out. I knew it would be tight. It’s been my goal to beat Sachem.”

Six of the 12 bouts were decided in the final 30 seconds and, when it was over, Longwood had edged Sachem, 2019. The win gave Longwood the League I championship and the loss snapped Sachem’s 36-match win streak.

“This was the year for our sport,” said Sachem coach Jack Mahoney. “There are some very tough teams and I knew Longwood would be the match of the year. Now we have a new challenge set before us . . .”

Perhaps the greatest challenge last night belonged to the heavyweights. Longwood‘s Marcus Wilson, a first-year wrestler, needed to avoid being pinned. Never mind that there were 1,700 fans packed into Sachem’s gymnasium and a league title at stake.

“I was feeling good,” Wilson said. “I knew what I had to do tonight to help contribute to our victory.”

Sachem’s Sean Niemeth had a considerably greater task, as his team trailed, 20-15. He needed either a pin or a technical fall for a team victory or a superior decision (at least a 12-point win) for a tie. Niemeth tossed Wilson to his back three times with a variety of ankle picks and snapdowns in the first period to open a 6-2 lead. Niemeth took a 12-5 lead into the third period and the Longwood chants changed from “Long-wood! Long-wood!” to “Mar-cus! Mar-cus!”

While referee Ken Cellan raised Niemeth’s hand after a 15-5 victory, Wilson was mobbed by the Longwood faithful. “I felt like a winner,” Wilson said. “Because my team was a winner . . . and that’s what’s important to me.”

Picozzi, with only four seniors and eight underclassmen on his roster, pointed to 14-year old ninth grader Nick Hall (177) as a major factor in the win. “We’re young with a lot of confidence,” Picozzi said. “Nicky gave us a five-point lead and put the pressure on them to pin in the last match.”

Hall (19-2) has been wrestling for nine years. “My heart was in my throat and I was so nervous,” Hall said. “But we were wrestling a superior team and I didn’t want the opportunity to beat them to slip past us. I knew I had to turn in a solid performance.”

Using powerful arm-bars, Hall systematically worked Jim Niemeth across the mat until Hall was able to turn him onto his back for three back points and an 8-2 decision.

And it was left to Wilson to get Picozzi his long-awaited victory over Sachem. Longwood 20, Sachem 19
