Longwood on Track At the Penn Relays: [SUFFOLK Edition]

Herrmann, Mark. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 30 Apr 1987

Longwood‘s Eric Gennes said he felt good before the final race – and it was an eerie feeling. “Usually, I’m the most nervous,” said the senior, who ran the third leg in the 4 x 800-meter relay at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia last Saturday. “I don’t know why, but I was making jokes.”

It turned out that Gennes and teammates Greg Fragola, Stuart Byrne and Shawn Brinton had nothing to be nervous about. They won their event at the prestigious meet, finishing in 8 minutes, 2.9 seconds – the best time by a Long Island team this year.

“We wanted to open their eyes to some big-time competition,” Longwood coach Tony Toro said of his runners. “Fortunately, they responded well.”

They didn’t pause to collect a lot of details, however. Gennes ran the pivotal third leg, but he doesn’t remember who his closest competitor was. “I was two or three yards behind him when I got the baton,” Gennes said. “Everybody said that I blew him out on the kick.”

He had to take everybody’s word for it. “I didn’t look back,” he said.

Now, they are looking ahead, with their eyes on other events. Gennes said that the foursome probably won’t be concentrating on the relay until the Suffolk spring championships.

But Toro does not think he has seen the last – or the best – of that relay team. “We’re hoping they can break 7:55 by the end of the season,” the coach said.
