WRESTLING 1986-87 Arrows Point to Sachem Defending Suffolk champ has power to again beat foes:

By Gregg Sarra. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 30 Nov 1986

WITH THE RETURN of 19 wrestlers who placed in the league tournament, including two state tournament qualifiers, Sachem appears to have the talent needed to win League I and successfully defend its Suffolk wrestling title. Having the largest school enrollment helps, as does hard work. “A lot of our work throughout the year will prove successful,” said Sachem coach Jack Mahoney. “A lot of commitments have been made in preparation for the season. The foundation has been laid.”

Part of that foundation was built or solidifed in other sports for some Sachem wrestlers. “Three sport athletes are in good shape and don’t get mentally tired with the same skills,” Mahoney said. “They learn a lot of things from other coaches that they may not get from me. It’s a major reason for our success.”

A prime example is Sachem senior Wayne Wilson. When Wilson isn’t pinning opponents, he’s challenging linebackers as a fullback on the football field in Sachem‘s I formation or throwing out potential basestealers for the baseball team. “Wayne placed third in the state at 157 {last season} and has wrestled for five years,” said Mahoney.

Lance Banfi (98), Mike Golini (134), heavyweight Frank Iacono, Rich Tietjen (105), Israel Ramaswamy (91), Lou DiFruscio (98), Joe Lopez (98), Ralph DelColle (112), Jim Burns (119), Mike Cozza (119) are back.

Seventy-five wrestlers have signed at Lindenhurst and that has coach Joe Russo envisioning a strong season. The return of league place-winners Joe Bruno (119), Ed Ingram (126) and Jason Inzirillo (112) form the nucleus. Ron Frole (167) was 10-2 last season before he dislocated his left elbow.

Four county place-winners and three league champs make Brentwood a strong contender as it moved up from League II. Andre Solomon (23-5 at 155), Bill Ystueta (21-4 at 167), Joe Gallagher (145) and Greg Hubschmitt (105) were county place-winners. Two-time county champion Keith Ketcham (105) leads Longwood. Ketcham, who finished third in the state last season, placed 10th in the world tournament in West Germany this past summer. Coach Mike Picozzi also has Chris Stevens (98), Gregg Moguel (105), Artie Ventura (138), Mike Heinz (155) and Marcus Raffaelle (177) returning.

Junior Kurt Lassen (145) was a league runnerup and took third in the county for Connetquot. Lassen was 29-6, but four losses were to teammate and state champion Joe Herrmann. With Herrmann having graduated, his record might be even better this season. Teammate and county runnerup Rich DeGennaro (25-9 at 112) will help lead a balanced team. Patchogue-Medford has heavyweight John Pastore (sixth in county) and league place-winners Dennis Chichester (heavyweight) and Tom Rodriguez (155). Three-year starter Jeff Detlefsen (126) and Butch Balzen (105) also return.

Ward Melville will be boosted by Dave Munisteri (26-5 at 155) and juniors Joe Matassa (138) and Eric Dimech (167). Floyd, which moved up from League II, has league champion Matt Kenneally (112). League II

Whitman has Richie Avignone (98), Andy Marlow (91), Andy Peers (112), Brian Amiegh (138) and Gene Nightingale (177) back. “Our JV was 12-1 and we were 10-3,” said coach Brian Uvena. “I expect to be in contention.” Junior varsity wrestlers Mike Delaney (8-0) and David Meyrowitz (11-0) join the team. League champions Dave Mallin (119) and Bill Mallin (126) lead a talented Smithtown East squad. Dave Regina (105) and Phil Rothman (177) also are back.

North Babylon has five league place-winners in the lighter weights but not much experience in the heavier classes. County place-winner Lou Pescatore (119), Ralph Cincinnati (105), Jack Sparacio (105), Anthony Sparacio (145) and Mark Holland (98) return. The graduation of 10 starters from West Islip will make this a challenging year for coach Tony Mellino, whose team moved down from League I. “We haven’t had this big of a turnover in the last eight years,” said Mellino. The loss of state place-winners Rick Brzozinski (126) and heavyweight Jim Kolk will hurt. The key returnees are Bob Jensen (112) and Paul Harvey (126).

While Centereach lost two starters, brothers Gary (132) and Craig Redding (126) will be back. Lenny Lombardo (112), Kevin Martinsen (119) and Chris Kielbasa (105) fill the lighter weights. “We haven’t had this good of a turnout in years,” said coach Rich Zakar. Northport, which moved down from League I, will turn to sophomore Mike Polo (22-5), who finished fourth in the county at 98, and Alan Weinstein (119). Junior Joon Kim (155) took fourth in the league last year and leads a Half Hollow Hills East team that is rebuilding. League III

The addition of Huntington, which moved up from League IV, and a solid Bellport squad gives League III a new look. This also could be East Islip’s year.

Huntington will make a strong bid, but the loss of state champions Gene McNeil (119) and Drew Jackson (167) to graduation will hurt. “We’ve graduated great wrestlers before,” said coach Lou Giani. “I’m pleased with my young group and their work ethic.” Eight place-winners return: John Fuimano (98), Phillip Christopher (91), Chip Henke (132), Justin Johnson (138), Troy Grenier (155), Terrence Taylor (167), Malcolm Figgs (250) and Fred Torres (250).

East Islip coach John DePompeo has stepped down following the death of a family member. “He did a nice job with that program,” said Mahoney. “He’s a credit to Suffolk wrestling. He’ll be missed.” Successor Rocky Gilmore, who served under DePompeo as an assistant, has a talented group. Key performers include Chris Haug (112), Jeff Yablon (98), Kevin Croteau (119) and Kurt Hubbard (126). “Our first league meet is at Huntington,” said Gilmore. “Enough said.”

Newfield will have a new coach. Billy Fox, who was an assistant at Bayport, will turn to league runnerup David Cannizzo (126), who compiled a 20-3-2 record. League place-winner Chris Dolce (105) is healthy after wrestling most of last season despite an injured shoulder. Hauppauge will be supported by senior Tom Palmer (126), Eric Hazen (105) and Mike Schweighardt (112). Coach Chris Messina summed up his team’s biggest potential problem: “Last year we were 10-3 with solid upper weights. We’ve lost all our upper weights.”

Senior Ralph Lee (177) took second in the league and place-winners Paul Crespi (98) and Nick Delapi (155) return for West Babylon. League place-winner Mark Samuel (91) and juniors Mike Uhrie (145) and George White (167) lead Bellport, which has moved up from League VI. League place-winners Ray Hargis (167) and Martin Pagan (215) are back for Central Islip, but the school is still on austerity and the program will suffer. “We had no junior varsity last year and it’s tough to get kids out to raise money,” coach Ed Rooney said. “It’s a burden and most kids would rather get a job.” League IV

Led by league champion Alex Porcelli, who finished third in the county at 177 for the second year in a row, Bay Shore is favored to win. Porcelli will move to heavyweight and if the young wrestlers develop, Bay Shore will be tough. Place-winners Bill Dolan (112) and Chris Morley (167) are back. With seven returning league place-winners, Comsewogue coach Tom Judge expects to have a balanced squad. Back are Tom Gironda (177), Chuck Essenburg (119) and Keith Donohue (126). Mark Vollbehr (132) was 17-3 during the season but suffered a concussion and missed tournaments.

Kings Park has the numbers. “We’ll be solid with eight starters back,” said coach Bill Davey. “We were 6-1 in league and 11-3 overall last year. Huntington’s gone and we’ve got a shot.” Senior captain Phil Spinella, who suffered a broken leg in a football game, is a league champ at 138 and is expected to be ready for the season. Returning are place-winners Dan Diamond and Joe Leo, both at 98 pounds, and Chris Short (177). League champions Dale Hall (132), Harold Wigler (second in the county at 138) and John Mankowich (145) lead an experienced Commack North squad. “Dual meet-wise we’ll have no balance,” said coach Tony Peraza. “But we’ll be a good tournament team.”

Half Hollow Hills West coach Joe Goonan likes his teams balance. League runnerup Todd Petraco (91) is back as are Jon Berlent (112) and Mike Walling (155). Deer Park returns Chris Klyap (119), Steve Caratozzolo (126) and Erick Englehardt (138). Smithtown West has moved down a league and will turn to Ian Rubin (119), Steve Richey (132) and Jeff Conte (98). League V

Two-time league champion Mike Lugo (fourth in county at 132) and league champion Jeff Hayes (third in county at 91) lead Babylon. Both are juniors. Sophomore Paul Royle (157), who finished fifth in county, is another reason coach Bill DeSario believes his team may win the championship. Commack South graduated 10 starters but will be competitive, according to coach Bob Schuster: “We’ll surprise people,” said Schuster. “Cliff Dean {138}, Jim Manikas {155}, Brian Dinkelmeyer {155}. Who are those guys?” Watch them and find out.

Mike Friedman (105) of Harborfields finished 31-2 and looks to maintain his fine dual-meet record and help his team improve it. John Murphy (98), Andrew Lawless (105) and Matt Sapolin (119) make Islip an experienced team.

Place-winners Willie Wrenn (98), Billy Maisel (132), Billy Powell (119), Charlie Lennon (138) and Warren Thompson (167) return for Amityville. League champion Jean Blain (250) and sophomore Darren Szokoli (132) will lead Glenn. Senior Doug Spence (112) returns from an injury; he was 12-3. Copiague coach Ralph Forman Jr. looks to improve with some experienced juniors. League VI

Lee Coulter (105), who captured the county title in 1985 and finished second to Ketcham last season, bolsters Shoreham-Wading River. Coulter, a county qualifier for four years, league champ Ko Matsui (105), Dean Hough (119), Pete McHugh (91) and Chris Walbemar (91) return. Junior Eric Strovink (21-5 at heavyweight) is a three-time place winner.

County place-winner Kyle Wagner (98), who lost only two matches last season (both to Coulter), and Kurt Wagner (fifth in county at 105) will lead Port Jefferson. Craig Levine (138), Tim Longo (167) and some wrestlers who were on a solid junior varsity team has made coach Bob Armstrong optimistic.

Jeff Ciolino (fifth in county at 119) and league champion Hal Goodale (155) lead Riverhead. With a squad full of seniors and the return of league champ Rob Casazza (third in county at 119), league runnerup Dave Narby (112) and Scott Peterson (105), Miller Place looks forward to continuing its development. League champion Matt Daly (26-4 at 91) finished fifth in the county for Rocky Point. Mike Frangos (177) and four-time starter Bob Seebacher (156) also return. League VII

League champion Tom Shaw (91), runnerup Billy Shaw (119) and league- and place-winner Rob Casella (177) round out a solid Westhampton team. Mattituck returns league champion Jeff Tuthill (119), who is ranked sixth in his senior class, and John Goodwin (98), who was a league champ in 1985 and finished as a runner up last season.

A few seniors and some tough freshman will give East Hampton a full lineup. Eric Kaufman (county runnerup at 105) and league champion Amasa Winter (105) lead five other returning league place-winners. Stony Brook will look to Aaron Cooper (177), Ken Moore (heavyweight), Jim Stephens (132) and Sung Koh (138). * * *

Previews from Sayville, Wyandanch, Bayport, LaSalle MA, Southampton and Greenport / Southold were not available.

Preview: Longwood.

Grappling With a Weighty Problem:

By Mark Herrmann. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 08 Jan 1987

It is a weighty problem for some high school wrestlers. Theywonder whether they can enhance their championship prospects bygaining a few pounds and moving up one class, or passing up those french fries and facing lighter opponents. Or maybe they should stay where they are.

Longwood‘s Keith Ketcham and Sachem’s Lance Banfi might have to grapple with that dilemma before the Suffolk championship meet in February. Both won county titles last season – Ketcham at 98 pounds, Banfi at 91 – but each could put a half-Nelson on the other’s hopes for a repeat title. Both weighed in for this season at 105.

They might face each other tomorrow night in a dual meet at Longwood. Neither team wanted to be pinned down about its lineup last week.

Meets in early January notwithstanding, Sachem coach Jack Mahoney pointed out that there are only three returning county champions: Banfi, Ketcham and Sachem’s Wayne Wilson. “It would be a shame for two of them to be in the same weight class,” Mahoney said.

He would like to avoid the sort of standoff that took down Huntington’s Gene McNeill in 1985. McNeill and West Islip’s Ricky Brzozinski had been state champions in different classes a year earlier, but both landed in the same weight class the following season. McNeill missed a shot at another state title – he missed out on the entire state meet – because he lost to Brzozinski in the Suffolk final.

If somebody has to budge from 105 this year, it probably will not be Ketcham. Based on his third-place finish in the state last winter and his 10th-place finish in the World Junior Freestyle championships in West Germany last summer, Ketcham is considered the favorite by most coaches.

“I was going to go to 112, except I wanted to keep my weight down,” Ketcham said. “My coach said I’d have a better chance of making the national team if I stayed at this weight.”

“I think he could win the counties in either class,” said Longwood coach Mike Picozzi. “We’re looking for the place where he’ll have the best shot at the states.”

Ketcham, a 5-foot-3 senior who had a 34-2 record last year, said he feels quick and strong at his current weight. And he added that it’s easy to remain so light. “I only got up to 120 in the off-season,” he said.

So Banfi, a 5-foot-7 junior who went 26-2 last season, is thinking about making a move to the 98-pound class. “It wouldn’t affect me that much,” he said. “Everybody thought I was going to be heavier this year, anyway.”

Banfi realizes what a drop in weight class would mean to his diet: “No junk food,” he said. But he added that Sachem’s practices are strenuous enough to keep anyone’s waistline trim.

Switching weight classes is not as easy as walking onto the mat a few minutes earlier. Suffolk athletic regulations forbid a wrestler to compete in any weight class unless he has been certified by a school physician – Banfi has been certified for 98 and 105, Ketcham for 105 and 112.

And to qualify for post-season events, a wrestler must appear in that weight class four different weekends during the season.

That means Banfi and his coach will have to reach a decision soon. A victory over Ketcham tomorrow could change everyone’s thinking.

“He’s good, he’s very strong,” Banfi said of his Longwood counterpart. “I’m pretty good on my feet, but he’s very good on his feet.”

Ketcham said he feels more confident after summertime victories over wrestlers from Canada and Great Britain. “It’s a good thing there was such good competition over there. If I had won the worlds, I would have really been cocky this year,” he said.

Banfi missed out on summer competition after he broke a toe in a moped accident. The tall, thin teenager is back on his feet, however. He defeated teammate Joe Lopez, 2-0, in the final of a nine-team tournament at Sachem last week.
