Longwood Wins Sportsmanship Award

Winless in all 14 League I games last fall, Longwood‘s boys soccer team apparently did not grouse about bad luck or bad calls. And it finally earned a victory, of sorts. The team recently was presented the Suffolk County Soccer Officials Association’s sportsmanship award.

“I knew about it two days in advance, but when we got it, I was still at a loss for words,” said Longwood coach Dennis Terry. “I was elated.”

This wasn’t the Lions’ goal when the season started. “We want to win every ballgame while we’re out there, but after it’s over, you just shake hands and forget about it,” said Terry, whose team went 3-15. “You can’t just look at Ws and Ls all the time.”

He pointed out that this is not an annual consolation prize. Previous winners include North Babylon, which also won a string of county championships.
