HIGH SCHOOLS Suffolk Takes Charge in Meet of Champs Showcase for Comsewogue girl: [NASSAU AND SUFFOLK Edition]
By David Shaw. Newsday, Combined editions; Long Island, N.Y. [Long Island, N.Y]. 21 June 1986: 29.
To some competitors, last night’s Long Island Athletic Club Meet of Champions at Mitchel Field in Uniondale was a low-key, season-ending track and field meet. But for Comsewogue eighth-grader Kim Shelton, it was a showcase.
“Even though I’m only in eighth grade, I want to make a name for myself,” she said after Suffolk beat Nassau, 271-190, to win its second straight girls title. “I want to be known as a very good athlete.”
That should not be difficult if she continues to shine as she did this season when Comsewogue earned its first Suffolk title. In last Saturday’s state meet, Shelton placed fourth in the triple jump with a Long Island-record 38 feet, 9 inches. In the long jump, her best event, she placed fifth (18-10 3/4).
“The long jump is very important to me,” she said after recording a 17-8 3/4 last night and finishing third behind Deer Park’s Joan Gray (18-11 1/2) and Freeport’s Sonya Henry (18-2 3/4). “I’ve been working at it since fifth grade at Infant Jesus. I never even tried the triple jump until two months ago.”
Yet the triple jump is where Shelton has been more successful. She fouled on her first, second and fourth attempts. On her third, she leaped 36-8 1/4 to edge Wantagh eighth-grader Sue Silvas (35-5 1/4). “I was very upset with the first two fouls,” Shelton said. “I wasn’t approaching with enough speed. This event is mostly mental.”
Turning to the future, Shelton conceded that next season most likely will be her last at Comsewogue, as her family is planning to move to Chattanooga, Tenn. “If I do move and continue in track, I expect to be tough.” * * *
Newfield’s Valerie Bertrand won the 400 in a Suffolk record 55.3 seconds, erasing the mark set by Brentwood’s Tracy Piper (55.62) in the 1981 state meet . . . Brentwood’s Allison Williams tied a school record in winning the 100-meter high hurdles (14.8). (Running events in meters) Suffolk 271, Nassau 190
